Impact Based Decision Support Services (IDSS) Jason Tuell National Weather Service

Key Elements of IDSS? Better understanding societal impacts, Making our information more relevant to decisions Participating directly in decision-making for those decisions fundamental to the role of government, especially protection of life and property Counting on market forces to provide diverse decision-support services across the entire economy.

IDSS – New Idea? IDSS is not a new thing for NWS: IDSS does not change the boundaries of the NWS mission – we have always been a decision support agency IDSS does not change our commitment to the Partnership Policy – We will still have a pre-decisional dialog before changing our operational  services

What is “IDSS”? Triad of Concepts embodies “Impact-based Decision Support Services (IDSS)” Impact-based Services NWS intent to better understand the impact on society of the services that NWS provides and to use this understanding to focus NWS resources on things that matter. Decision Assistance to Core Partners NWS intent to provide direct personal assistance to the decision making process of Governmental decision makers during high impact events. NWS can reach the entirety of US Society through its close relationships with NWS Core Partners Decision-relevant Information NWS intent to make all of its information easy to find, understand and incorporate into decision making across the whole of US Society – affects all NWS information services to its delivery

Practical Examples 0.75” vice 1.0” hail warnings Temperature Winds Is forecasting a high of 68 F significant? Is forecasting a low of 32 F significant? Winds Gust thresholds, direction critical to local aviation amendment criteria
