Chemical Analysis Unit 1 SCH 4C

Chemical Analysis Analytical chemistry deals with identifying the chemical composition or make-up of substances. Chemical analysis can be qualitative or quantitative.

Qualitative analysis Qualitative analysis is the testing of a substance or mixture to determine what materials are present.

Quantitative analysis Quantitative analysis is the testing of a substance or mixture to determine how much of a material is present.

Chemical Analysis Chemical analysis provides important information for science and industry. Chemical analysis is used: To test samples of air, soil and water to identify pollutants To help in the diagnosis of disease In quality control tests of food, drug and other industries

Different methods of qualitative analysis are suited to each of these different applications. The techniques are designed to test a sample of a substance for the properties of a particular element or compound.

Techniques of Qualitative Analysis Some techniques include: chromatography emission and absorption spectroscopy solubility of ions characteristic properties and reactions of substances

Connections to Your World Qualitative analysis tests used everyday include: Pregnancy tests Breathalyser tests Drug tests pH testing kits for a pool Blood glucose test for diabetics

1.1 Activity Turn to page 8-9 Read through the lab activity and create an observation table in your lab book.
