Apples Crop : Golden Delicious Apple Product: Nordox 75 WG RATE: 5 lbs/ Acre Location: Phelps, NY Apples represent 45K acres in NY, and most acres receive a copper application at green tip to reduce the initial apple scab infestations. Fireblight is a significant concern across US apple production due to resistance in the pathogen (Erwinia amylovora) to Streptomycin, the major product used to manage fire blight. Many researchers across the country are examining alternatives to manage fireblight, and since coppers are effective against the pathogen, research is warranted at documenting efficacy, as well as, evaluating potential phytotoxicity to fruit surface. Treatment Summary: Nordox 75 WG was applied under slow drying conditions and rapid drying conditions Applied on June 22 at 7 am at 5lb/a with heavy dew and slow drying time Applied on July 20 at 10 am at 5lbs/a with dry conditions and rapid temperature increase

These data indicate that Nordox 75WP at 5 lb product/A applied under slow drying, but not fast drying, will cause roughened surface of Golden Delicious fruit. Note these data were collected following applications to developing fruit. This is the worst case scenario for developing fruit. For evaluation of applications targeting fireblight, applications around bloom, alone and in combinations with other products is suggested.

Grapes Crop: Concord Grapes Product: Nordox 75 WG Rate: 1.25 lb/ Acre Location: Fredonia, NY Collaborators: Rick Dunst Consultant; Trial Conducted by Double AA Vineyards Concord grapes represent 23,000 A in NY, with additional 14,000 A in PA. Copper fungicides are typically applied twice to over 50% of the acreage for management of late season Powdery mildew and Downy mildew. Millitello farm supply (Fredonia, NY) is the major dealer for products to the Concord grape industry. They conducted a trial to evaluate various copper fungicides for efficacy against diseases and potential phytotoxicity to grapevines. Copper fungicides typically have had lime applied in order to “safen” potential phytotoxicity of the copper products. Comments Gowan (Badge w/ obvious phyto)  = Sales person said: “No issues with Badge on concords!!!!!!!!!”   Thus if Gowan can say such a statement (which is FALSE), then Brandt should sell 10 times as many pallets of copper! Dupont rep for “Kocide 3000”… They indicated that they are selling Kocide 3000 at the lowest commercial price “in order to make the sale” with Militello.  The research contact for Militello, Rick Dunst indicated that Dupont was not willing to offer “efficacy/support” of product unless “LIME” was added as a safener… But then the sales rep “sidestepped” that question during the question and answer portion of the tour… Of course this changes now that Dupont has sold the Kocide business, supposedly Certis will be the new distributor. CHAMP is from NuFarm and has no company support. There were no reps present at the meeting. BRANDT is a global leader in plant health and innovation. Conclusion Conclusion: Disease control with Brandt’s Nordox, Tritek and Kaligreen all provide excellent Powdery Mildew Control in NY growing conditions. On Varieties tested this year Nordox 75 was safe to use however on other varieties further testing is warranted such as catawa, aurore, concord, etc… Kaligreen appears safe and issues are not visible or expected. Kaligreen is an excellent eradication of powdery mildew control. Nordox should be promoted as a safe copper control solution for northeast grape industry. Oils are actively used in Northeast grapes and Tritek opportunities exist. Further exposure to the industry is warranted. Accurate measuring of Tritek will be important for sales.

Pumpkins Crop: Pumpkins Variety: Var = ‘Howden’ Pumpkins represent > 6,800 A in NY, and remaining cucurbits (cucumbers & squash) represent an additional > 10,000 A. Most cucurbits require 3-7 applications of fungicides for powdery mildew. Strobilurin fungicides (eg Quadris), were extremely active against powdery mildew, however, due to shift in single major gene within fungus, there is complete loss in fungicide efficacy (this is Qualitative resistance). Sterol inhibitor fungicides (such as Rally (=myclobutanil), remain partially effective, due to multiple genes for fungicide resistances within fungus; (this is Quantitative resistance), and efficacy appears to deteriorate. Coppers are an excellent choice for powdery mildew in cucurbits, because no known resistance appears currently within the powdery mildew fungus, and copper also provides excellent control of another very common disease “downy mildew”. For reference, sulfur fungicides and quinoxyfen are currently effective against powdery mildew; but not downy mildew. Chlorothalonil, has been shown to be effective against powdery mildew, and provides some reduction in downy mildew. There is “interest” within the horticultural oils for providing management of powdery mildew, so Tritek was added for comparison. Pumpkin Results Conclusion Four replicates of Howden pumpkin plots were used in this study; plots were 1 row by 40 ft long. Pumpkins were planted June 20. Nordox (1.25 lb prod/A); TriTek (2% solution), and Bravo WS 1.5 pt/A) were compared to non treated plants. Treatments were applied weekly to pumpkin plants after the first powdery mildew lesion was observed. Applications were applied with a CO2Backpack sprayer that was calibrated to deliver 40 GPA at 42 psi. Hollow cone nozzles (TXVS 18) were used. Weekly evaluations of the surface area of the foliage was recorded on 5 to ten leaves per plot. Note due to variability across the plot area; yields were not collected. Also note the Sept 25 rating is approx. 3 weeks after the 5th application, and is not considered as a length of time that Nordox or Tritek would provide commercial level of control of cucumber powdery mildew. Thus comparison of efficacy of products is limited to September 16 rating. Nordox provided commercially acceptable control of powdery mildew for the duration of this trial.. While not as effective as Bravo, sufficient control was provided for a commercial level of control. Nordox would be an excellent rotational partner for other powdery mildew only products, as copper has very good efficacy against downy mildew (which is common in the Eastern US across most cucurbits. TriTek provided a level of reduction in the severity of powdery mildew comparible to Nordox. Performance of TriTek could be increased by rotations with other mode of actions. Future research is suggested to insert Nordox; Tritek (& Kaligreen) as rotational partners with other fungicides in season long programs.
