Rome was 15 miles inland to avoid attacks from pirates 7 hills protected Rome Mountains were not as big as Greece mountains so this made Italy good for growing crops. (2 crops from Rome were olives and grapes.) Mild climate and rich soil (Just like Greece)

Myths on how Rome was founded (Legends) 1) Romolous & Remes (abandoned 2 babies) rescued by a wolf & raised by a shepherd. Romolous was building a wall & Remes made fun of it so Romolous killed him and he became the 1st Roman King & Rome was named after him. 509 B.C. Rome became REPUBLIC, they had power. Rome was strong for many reasons: Strong Army Discipline was harsh Deserters were killed Rulers were smart planners Built roads for they could easily travel to towns Treated conquered people nicely and some of the people they conquered had the opportunity to become Roman citizens

Roman Civilization They copied Greek culture Put statues in homes and public buildings.(Greek statues were perfect and Roman statues were more realistic.) Used Columns and Arches (First to use arches for support) Wrote about Greek myths and wrote poems (Odes) Had circuses and also had gladiators Boys went to school to learn reading, writing, and public speaking. Girls stayed home to learn house hold chores and some were educated at home. More Money= More freedom Women had strong influence on husbands Worshipped many gods and goddesses (Deities)

Contributions Aqueducts 5000 miles of road “All roads lead to Rome” Advances in science and engineer Had sewers to remove waste (But was still a very dirty city) Used concrete Built colosseum (80 A.D.) and pantheon (Honor Rome’s Gods)

Important People Galen was a doctor who dissected animals to learn about anatomy Livy wrote down history of Rome in 10 B.C. said that history taught us a moral lesson. Spartacus was a slave/gladiator who, with the support of 70,000 enslaved people, defeated the several Roman armies, after 2 years they were crucified.

Culture The city was set up where roads crossed each other with right angles. In the center there was a FORUM (its a market place where they have temples and buildings.) Wealthy people had a large beautiful home with gorgeous gardens. Each house had a atrium. Wealthy also had estates in the country. Most people were poor. Lived in poorly built apartments (6 stories high) rent was high so many people lived in one room. FIRE HAZARD and COLLAPSED.

All houses had offerings to deities Father was in complete control of household he arranged marriages and punished children severely Rome accepted other religions as long as they did not threaten government. 100 B.C. 40% of population were slaves (Greek slaves as teachers, doctors, and artisans.)

Fall of Rome Commodus became emperor (Cruel and wasted loss of money) he wanted to be a gladiator more than an emperor Many revats Economy poor Plague killed 1/10 population Inflation= government put less gold in coins people found out they had little value and people began to barter. Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Frents, Vandals, Angles and saxons, german invaders, persia Al of these people invaded Rome at a different place, some of these invaders were successful and some were not.

Why people came to Rome Wanted Rome because of warmer climates, gazing islands, and Rome’s wealth. 300 A.D. Huns from Mongolia defeated ostrogoths. 378 A.D. Vislgoths defeated Rome at battle of ADRIANOPLE (Rome gave up land for the 1st time in 800 years). Visigoth leader Alaric captured Rome itself, bumed records and looted. 2 pairs (Western and Eastern) Theodosius divided into 2 pairs. Western Roman empire fell to German invaders!!!!
