Domestic Violence Survey in the Palestinian Territory ((December, January, 2006

Introduction Lack of local studies about domestic violence on Palestinian Territory. Lack of administrative records about violence. Need of government and NGOs for this type of indicators. Needs of Studying and measuring the actual phenomenon of violence in the Palestinian society. Economic and social bad situation be create social issues affected to violence.

Violence against women any act (???) of gender- based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life UN 1993 The terms and concepts of this survey are based on the attitudes and behaviors of individuals covered in the survey questionnaire and on international concepts and classifications while taking into consideration of the Palestinian context Definition of Violence Against Women

Objectives of the survey To provide us with crucial database. Explore the nature, forms and acts of violence. Explore if any connection between the Palestinian household being exposed to political violence and practicing different acts of violence within the Palestinian household. Explore the demographic and social characteristics of the individuals who are exposed to violence.

Explore the demographic and social characteristics of the individuals who are practice violence. Explore methods that A Palestinian woman uses to counter domestic violence against her.

Planning and methodology of survey PCBS has planned and conducted the Domestic Violence Survey in 2005 as the follows: 1. Review international studies. 2. Conducted a User-Produces workshops to discuss indicators, questionnaire, and methodology. 3. Create a national steering committee to follow up finalizing indicators and questionnaire in addition to following up data collection, analysis, dissemination of results.

The Sample 1.The sample is cluster and random with two stages: * first stage: selecting cluster, randomly, and systematic sample of 234 enumeration areas. * second stage: selecting randomly sample of households from the selected enumeration areas of the first stage; 18 households were selected from each enumeration area selected during the first stage. Kish tables were used to select persons for every sections only elderly people take all individuals.

Cont… 2. The target community of the Domestic Violence Survey consists of the following: A. Ever-married women aged (15-64) years B. Children aged (5-17 years) C. Unmarried women (18 years and over) D. Elderly 65 years and over. 3. The survey sample size totaled 4,212 household including 2,772 in the West Bank and 1,440 house hold in Gaza Strip. -- Reference Period: 2

1.The pilot survey included 54 households distributed at three localities in Ramallah at 18 households. 2. The filed work of the pilot study started on November 19 th, A feedback of the pilot survey and its results was compiled at the end of the work and an assessment report was produced. 4. The training course of the interviewers for main survey went on for 6 days (December 10-15, 2005). Collection of Data

Videoconferencing was used in training between the West Bank team and the Gaza Strip team. The field teams started compiling data in the West Bank and Gaza Strip on December 18 th, 2005 and finished on January 18 th, 2006 The data collect by face to face. Receiving completed questionnaires from the interviewers every day. The technical administration of the survey held constant communication with the interviewers and the field supervisors through visits.

Political Violence of Israeli Forces or Settlers 30.1% of individuals of the Palestinian society had been exposed to political violence against human beings by Israeli forces or settlers during Palestinian wives perspective in the Palestinian Territory stated that 77.1% of individuals of the Palestinian society had been exposed to the political violence against human beings practiced by Israeli forces or settlers During the Period Preceding, 2005.

25.6% of men in the Palestinian society were exposed to psychological violence, 4.2% of men were exposed to physical violence in the Palestinian Territory during % of men in the Palestinian Society were exposed to psychological violence of the wife, 9.5% of men were exposed to physical violence in the Palestinian Territory During the Period Preceding, Men Exposed to violence by Wife According to Wife Perspectives

52.7% of unmarried females had been exposed to psychological violence, as stated by the unmarried females; 25.0% of them were exposed to physical violence during % of unmarried females were exposed to psychological violence and 29.9% of them were exposed to physical violence During the Period Preceding, Never Married Women (18 years and over)

Children (5-17) years Results indicated that 51.9% of women support exposed children to violence; 55.2% of women agree to beat male children and 49.5% of women agree to beat female children in the Palestinian Territory. Elderly 65 years and over 5.7% of elderly people suffered physical abuse, 17.5% suffered emotional abuse, 5.8% were exposed to economic abuse, and 8.6% of elderly people suffered from medical negligence by a household member whether they reside or not with such household member in the Palestinian Territory.

Expected Main Users The data assist NGOs to develop their programs and plans in accordance with the findings. Calling government institutions and the NGOs to direct their awareness and curative programs. The data of the Survey provide important facts to legislators so that they can enact laws reflecting these facts and help social development and build institutions and provide and qualify professional cadres to encounter this problem.

The data also provide important facts concerning government plans, programs, and policies of different levels for review and amend in order to adapt to reality. The data Reflected a real picture of the domestic violence phenomenon.
