What is Relay Recess? ◘It is part of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life global event, tailored specifically for an elementary school. ◘An opportunity to unite students, school personnel, parents with the American Cancer Society and the Relay community to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays ◘Relay Recess is unique and flexible to fit any school culture ◘Relay Recess engages students to: 1. be educated on cancer prevention 2. fundraise to help others in the community 3. be more physically active 2

A Character-building, community service and leadership activity. ◘Students work alongside adult coordinators ◘Students honor those who have had cancer ◘Students connect with the local community Relay For Life ◘Students will continue to have leadership and volunteer opportunities – middle school, high school and college - with Relay For Life Creating a healthier generation ◘Students will be engaged in fun activities about the benefits of nutrition, physical activity, sun safety, and tobacco prevention ◘Relay Recess spotlights childhood nutrition because it has been proven that obesity will be as likely to cause cancer as tobacco for the students of today. ◘Most smokers start smoking by the time they leave grade school. Set the Passion & Understand the Resources Passion ◘Identify adult coordinators that can lead your school to accomplish your goals. ◘Communicate your reason to help make a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Resources ◘Coordinator kits with step by step instructions on how to run a Relay Recess program. ◘Classroom kits with materials for students to take home and cancer prevention lessons. ◘Posters, stickers, and other promotional materials. ◘Customized URL and website for your School fundraising and Relay Recess updates ◘Connection with your community Relay For Life event. ◘Incentive program. Individual or School-based ◘Internet based game for students focused on healthy eating. ◘ACS staff and/or ACS volunteer liaison 7
