Bees and the Garden Abby Loew EDU 345 M 8am March 22, 2004

Bees are a very important part to the garden and the plants in the garden. The most important thing that they do is transfer pollen from one plant to another.

How much do bees do?  While foraging for nectar and pollen, bees inadvertently transfer pollen from the male to the female components of flowers. Each year, bees pollinate 95 crops worth an estimated $10 billion in the U.S. alone. All told, insect pollinators contribute to one-third of the world's diet. The Buzz About Bees The Buzz About Bees

About the Hive A hive is where bees live. This is where they do a lot of their work and this is where the honey is stored. This bee is collecting pollen.

More about Pollen Even though bees transfer pollen, humans do eat pollen. It is said to be nature’s complete food. Bee pollen rejuvenates your body, stimulates organs and glands, and brings about a longer life span. Bee pollen's ability to consistently and noticeably increase energy levels makes it a favorite substance among many world class athletes and those interested in sustaining and enhancing quality performance.

 You don’t usually just eat plain pollen, it can land in your food and it is good for you!  It isn’t the same pollen though that people have allergies from.

Now….. Since you have learned a little about bees and why they are so useful, you are going to get to use the internet yourself to do even more! Just follow the directions in this web quest and see what you come up with!! Have fun!! Save the Honey Bees Save the Honey Bees
