Unmet need for family planning

Main issue Unmet need for family planning, although not a MDG indicator yet, has been identified as an indicator for Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women Defined using a set of questions eliciting current preferences and behaviours (women at risk of pregnancy, their fertility preferences and current contraceptive status) Unmet need is defined as the proportion of all married/union women who are fecund, sexually active, wish to avoid another birth or space at least two years and are not using a method of contraception

CONTRACEPTION AND UNMET NEEDCP CP1. I would like to talk with you about another subject – family planning – and your reproductive health. Are you pregnant now? Yes, currently pregnant1 No2 Unsure or DK8 2 CP2 8 CP2 CP1a. At the time you became pregnant did you want to become pregnant then, did you want to wait until later, or did you not want to have any more children? Then1 Later2 Not want more children3 1 CP4b 2 CP4b 3 CP4b CP2. Some people use various ways or methods to delay or avoid a pregnancy. Are you currently doing something or using any method to delay or avoid getting pregnant? Yes1 No22 CP4a CP3. Which method are you using? Do not prompt. If more than one method is mentioned, circle each one. Female sterilizationA Male sterilizationB PillC IUDD InjectionsE ImplantsF CondomG Female condomH DiaphragmI Foam/jellyJ Lactational amenorrhoea method (LAM)K Periodic abstinenceL WithdrawalM Other ( specify )X CP4a. Now I would like to ask some questions about the future. Would you like to have (a/another) child, or would you prefer not to have any (more) children? CP4b. If currently pregnant: Apart from the child you are now expecting, would you like to have another child, or would you prefer not to have any (more) children? Have (a/another) child1 No more/none2 Says she cannot get pregnant3 Undecided/dont know8 2 next module 3 next module 8 next module CP4c. How long would you like to wait before the birth of (a/another) child?Months1 __ __ Years2 __ __ Soon/now993 Says she cannot get pregnant994 After marriage995 Other996 Dont know998 CP4D. Check CP1: Currently pregnant? Go to Next Module Not currently pregnant or unsure? Continue with CP4E CP4E. DO YOU THINK YOU ARE PHYSICALLY ABLE TO GET PREGNANT AT THIS TIME? Yes 1 No 2 DK 8

Proportion of demand satisfied For monitoring purposes it is proposed that the following indicator be constructed from the response set: Proportion of Demand Satisfied by Modern Contraception = Modern Method users/ (Modern method users + Traditional method users + Unmet need) or Proportion of Demand Satisfied by Any Method of Contraception = (Modern Method users + Traditional method users) / (Modern method users + Traditional method users + Unmet need)

Methodological issues Data can be obtained for all women or for women currently married/union The proportion of satisfied demand for contraception can be reported by modern methods or by all methods It requires adaptation of the questionnaire and technical assistance for its implementation Follow up on the inclusion of this indicator in the analysis and reporting stages
