Krakatoa Tsunami 1883 By: Jamie Wadsworth

Where did the tsunami occur?  The tsunami hit the volcanic island of Krakatoa, which is located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra, in Indonesia.  Ships as far away as South Africa rocked when this tsunami hit. The approximate dimensions of the tsunami were 5 by 9 kilometers.

When did the tsunami occur?  The tsunami occurred hours after the volcano, “Krakatoa” erupted in It destroyed many villages and cities in a matter of minutes.

Who was affected by this natural disaster?  The tsunami hit 295 villages and approximately 36,000 people fell victim to this ominous wave. 165 villages were completely destroyed while some of the others still stood with their homes. There were a lot of injured people without homes after this disaster. The island itself was affected by the tsunami and the volcano. They reshaped almost half of the island! The tsunami destroyed two thirds of the island nation and created 130- foot-high waves.

Who helped out? The Dutch authorities eventually arrived to help out the remaining survivors. The Dutch authorities eventually arrived to help out the remaining survivors. Cost to rebuild and heal?  It cost about 1.5 million dollars to repair Krakatoa’s damages and to heal its people.
