Melissa Jones Mrs. Jones is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park with a BS and a MS in Aerospace Engineering, both with an emphasis on Space Systems. Her primary employer since finishing her undergraduate degree has been Futron, with whom she was a part of the initial ISS PRA team (focusing on Environmental Control and Life Support Systems, in addition to medical issues and other systems, as necessary). She also supported a qualitative PRA effort for the STEREO spacecraft, system safety for the MESSENGER spacecraft, and an operational FMEA for the MESSENGER propulsion system (all out of Johns Hopkins Universitys Applied Physics Laboratory). After taking two years to work for a humanitarian organization, primarily in Baghdad, Iraq, and a year to finish her MS, Mrs. Jones returned to Futron and is currently the Avionics and Environmental Control and Life Support Systems lead in the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle Fault Tree Analysis effort.

Matthew Walters Mr. Matthew Walters is an engineer at Futron Corporation currently serving as Deputy Project Manager and Electrical Power System lead for the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle Fault Tree Analysis effort. Mr. Walters obtained degrees of Master of Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and B.S. in Physics from The University of the South, Sewanee. His professional experience includes Fault Tree Analysis, Probabilistic Risk Assessments (PRA), Modeling and Simulation, and Project Management for Futrons various Aerospace customers. While at Futron, Mr. Walters has developed PRA, Fault Tree and other analyses for the NASAs Space Shuttle Imagery System, Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), and Concept Exploration and Refinement trade studies for lunar missions. He has experience as a technical lead for a DARPA funded research project examining proven and leading edge simulation methodologies, including in network dynamics, statistical mechanics, and programmatic simulation capabilities. Mr. Walters has also provided Cost/Schedule Risk Analysis for Northrop Grumman Space Technologys Prometheus Program, (JIMO) and has served as the Project Manager for the NASA Safety Reporting System (NSRS) for the past three years. Mr. Walters has internally supported Futron with PRA, Fault Tree, and SAPHIRE (PRA code) training. He currently resides in Washington, DC, and works out of Futron Headquarters located in Bethesda, MD.

Abstract The Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) is part of the Constellation Program to send human explorers back to the moon, and then onward to Mars and other destinations in the solar system. Futron is tasked with performing the Fault Tree Analysis for Orbital Sciences Corporation to support Lockheed Martin Corporation. This analysis intends to assess the adequacy of the design of the CEV relative to Safety and Mission Assurance requirements.
