PART II Greatness According to Jesus February 8, 2015

Jesus Foretells His Death & Resurrection Again  Jesus moved on and went through Galilee, he did not want people to know where he was going.  Jesus was teaching his disciples, his focus is on them.

The Content of the Teaching  The Son of Man will be ‘delivered’ into the hands of men.  They will kill him and when he is killed, after three days he will rise again.

How Did the Disciples Respond? 1)They did not understand. 2)They were afraid to ask about it.

In Capernaum  Jesus asks his disciples what they were discussing on the way.  The disciples remained silent because they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.  Jesus patiently and calmly sits and he calls the twelve to himself and he says: If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant to all.

Principles of Greatness 1)To be great you must be last of all. 2)To be great you must be servant of all.

Jesus Illustrates Greatness  Jesus takes a child and puts the child in the midst of the disciples.  Jesus takes the child in his arms & says: Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.

What Happens When You Receive The Lowly in Jesus’ Name?  You receive Jesus himself and his Father who sent him!

John’s Problem  John the Apostle speaks up and he tells Jesus about a problem.  Jesus responds: Do not stop him, he’s one of mine.  This reveals the disciples have a heart problem.  Jesus concludes by saying: Whoever practices hospitality towards believers, in my name, will be rewarded.

Imperatives of Greatness According to Jesus 1)Be last; put others first. 2) Serve others; do not seek for others to serve you or your needs. 3) Practice hospitality towards believers. 4) Receive the lowly of this world in the name of Jesus.
