Our Goals for Today To explore and experience ways to bring academic enrichment to your after school program To discuss the ways children learn academically and socially To have fun!

Experience Enrichment Activities Literacy: The Story of My Name Chrysanthemum Math: Funny Bug Target Science: Fabulous Foam Flyer Black Magic

Literacy Activities Share the story of your name Read Chrysanthemum

Story of My Name Interview your partner for 2 minutes (each) about the story of his/her name. Some possible questions are: What is your name? What is the story of your first, middle, or last name? Who chose your name? How was your name chosen? What do you like to be called? Combine with another pair to make a group of four Have each person introduce his/her partner to another partnership, telling the story of their first, middle, or last name

Back at Your Site How would you modify this activity with your children? How did doing the activity before reading the story effect listening to the story? How would this activity support the children socially? What important skills were being reinforced by doing this activity?

Math Games Group Size: 4 (2 pairs) To do: One pair chooses “Funny Bug” and the other chooses “Target.” Prepare to teach your game to the other pair. Read all the pages about the game and practice playing it. Keep the Leader’s Role in mind (Before, During, and After the Game). Take turns teaching the games, and play the other pair’s game.

Back at Your Site How would you modify these games with your children? What important skills were being reinforced by playing these games? How do these games support children’s social development and confidence?

Science Experiments Start at your table. Work in pairs to complete the experiment. Once everyone has completed the experiment, discuss the science how you would modify it for different ages what changes you would make When instructed, go to the next table and repeat

Back at Your Site How would you modify these activities with your children? What important skills were being reinforced by doing this activities?

Wrap Up Turn to the person sitting next to you and discuss one or two ways you will use what you learned today.
