Do you require any assistance? Do you experience any symptoms? Calit2 Summer Research Program Minimize Hypoglycemic Episodes Utilizing Remote Assistance via Mobile Phones Sylvia Hon, Advisor: David A. Gough Objective Create a set of policies and recommendations for a mobile phone design that: a) Prioritizes in hypoglycemia intervention and emergency assistance. b) Serves as a useful convenient tool for Type I diabetic patients to improve their glycemic control. Diagram Parts 1. Glucose Sensor Measures the BG value continuously. Frequency to send BG value to phone: BG > 70 mg/dL, Every 10 min. BG 70 mg/dL, decreasing slowly, Every 5 min. BG 70 mg/dL, decreasing 3 – 5 mg/dL per 5 min, Every 2 min. 2. Blood Glucose Meter Finger stick calibration for a reference BG value. 3. Insulin Pump Holds specific amount of insulin for injection. 4. Mobile Phone Serves as main command center. Receives BG value from glucose sensor. Sends personal command to pump to inject insulin. Records received and inputted data. Synchronize data with online database server. Assists individual with step-by-step instructions in times of emergency. 5. Diabetes Menu 6. Online Database Server Holds updated data from the mobile phone and stores them in archives for self, family members, and physicians to look at. 7. Other Monitoring Locations Allow physicians or family members at work or at home to monitor the diabetic individual and provide remote assistance if necessary. Frequency of sending to different locations can vary by settings. Emergency Response / 3G Data of BGL, insulin unit, and food intake calories from the spread sheets can be graphed in customized time range, so comparisons can be easily made. Example: Data Stored in Spreadsheet Format © Diabetes: Technology & Therapeutics Example: Graph of two days BGL, Insulin Unit, and Calorie Intake data Every 10 Minutes Every Hour Every Week Background Qualcomm plans to launch a MVNO called LifeComm, a project that incorporates several existing medical devices into one cell phone. One of the application may be HealthPias GlucoPhone. The cell phone includes a blood glucose meter, and blood test results are sent to an online monitoring server where professionals overlook. Aside from the cell phone industry, Abbotts FreeStyle Navigator® is a CGM device that measures BGL continuously with directional arrows and alarms that warn users ahead of time that they are falling into hypoglycemia. There has not yet been a device that can allow diabetic individuals to monitor their BGL continuously and receive remote assistance in times that they are unconsciously falling into hypoglycemia. Significance Parents can monitor their diabetic childrens condition from work or when they are not near. Children snoozing pass their hypoglycemia alarms will alert their parents or emergency contacts for backup. Individuals will be warned ahead of time to be aware of an emerging hypoglycemic episode to avoid possible complications. Physicians will always have an updated version of ones diabetes profile, so adjustments and recommendations can be made at any time. Used together to determine units of insulin for injection. Hypoglycemia drops below 70 mg/dL.
