Why Tobacco Public Health Priority Tobacco is truly a global problem. Tobacco is second major cause of death in world. It is responsible for 5 million deaths worldwide due to tobacco related illness. If the present trends continue,number of deaths could rise to 10 Millions by the year According to WHO, by the year 2020, tobacco will become leading cause of death. 70% of these deaths occur in developing nations. Eighty five percent of all tobacco is used in South east Asia

Why Tobacco Public Health Priority Tobacco kills 1 million Indians in a year. This figure represents more deaths than from AIDS, Alcohol, Car Accidents, Murders, Suicides, Drugs and Fire combined. In India around 60% men and 3% women smoke where as 51% men and 30 % women are in the habit of chewing tobacco. In India alone, it is responsible for one in every four deaths. Around 2700 Indians die daily due to tobacco use. India is third largest producer of tobacco after China and USA and eighty percent of its production is consumed in the country itself.

Why Tobacco Public Health Priority Every day more than 3000 young people become regular smokers, that are more than one million kids per year. Half the people that smoke today-that is about 650 million people-will eventually be killed by tobacco Around 4000 chemicals and 400 other toxins are present in a cigarette smoke. People who start smoking in their teens as more than 70% do) and continue for two decades or more will die years earlier than those who never light up. Every eight seconds someone dies of tobacco use.
