Presentation transcript:

* The goal of this phase is to find credible and valid academic research from sources that will support your hypothesis. * In citing secondary sources, you are finding ways to answer your original research question. * The research you discover should help build the credibility of your research report. * Remember that you are looking to find information that answers your specific research question and that is related to your hypothesis.

* Resubmit your research question, variables and hypothesis. You may edit them from phase 1 based on my feedback. * Explain the 3 arguments you intend to find research for – these will be the topics for your 3 main body paragraphs. * You must find 2 credible and academic sources for each of your arguments

* You are to seek out SIX (6) separate sources of research that are related to your research question. For each source you must do the following: * Answer questions to evaluate the validity and credibility of the research source. * Properly cite the source using APA format. * A list of at least 5 research points taken from the source that will be expanded on in your paper. * A short paragraph that explains how this source relates to your hypothesis. * Make sure to consult the criteria for selecting proper sources and for filling out the templates from class lecture (ISU Phase 2 PPT on ClassNet.

* Set up the following format for each of your 6 sources: * (You can find a word document of this template on ClassNet – titled ‘ISU Phase 2 - Research Sources Template’)

Name of the Source: When was it Published?Where was it Published? Who is the Author(s)?What type of source is it? (Article, book…): Is this an academic source? How do you know? If it is not, you may not use it. Why is this a credible source? Why does the author/organization have the credibility to write this information? Explain: Source Citation for Reference List (Proper APA Format): Research Points (at least 8). Must be properly in-text references using APA format. Connection to Hypothesis – How does the information within this source connect to my hypothesis? It must be specifically related to one of your arguments.

* Use information from research that has already been accomplished * Summarize, connect and analyze data and results from credible research sources * Government statistics * University studies * Credible journals… * University Journal Articles – a study explaining the purpose, methods and conclusions of the topic * Transcripts of actual interviews or case studies – done by a credible source

For this Phase DO NOT USE: * Wikipedia * Blogs * Someone’s personal website * About.com * Magazine articles * Newspaper articles * Lecture notes from class * Textbooks PLEASE USE: * Government articles and statistics * A university article * A study done by a credible organization (i.e. United Nations etc.) * The library database – articles * An organization that is connected to your topic/issue – i.e. Alcoholics Anonymous * Academic books on the issue

* Explain why the author/organization is a reliable and credible person to be writing the article. Reasons can include: * They are a university professor who has done research in the field with this issue * They are an organization that is connected directly to the topic/issue * It is a government source * It is a primary research study done by social scientists * Expand on your explanation – you may need to do further research on your author to make sure they are credible and/or academic

* Make sure to use your sheet and the websites (provided from the lesson) as a guide to properly complete the APA format * Do not lose marks for small and careless errors

* You must include at least 8 research points from each source * These may include quotes or statistics or facts * DO NOT overuse quotes – most of your information should be paraphrased (still needs to be sourced) * Make sure to include enough information * Each point must be properly in-text sources using APA format

* What AREN’T research notes? * Cut and paste copies of online encyclopedias, journals, web sites, etc. * Word for word copies typed out of a book or magazine * Facts about your topic that you already know * What ARE research notes? * Paraphrasing (own words) of information that is relevant to your topic * Word for word replication of statements that cannot be paraphrased—with the author’s name, date and publication included * Dates, statistics, concepts relevant to the topic * How you think this source related to the topic

* You must provide a small paragraph explaining how your source is related to your research question variables and hypothesis. * Specifically, you are explaining how the information form this source helps prove (or goes against) the argument in your hypothesis.

Criteria/Levels Knowledge/Understanding - Content (What you know) Gathered at least 6 credible research sources Included at least 8 relevant research facts for each of the sources Thinking and Inquiry – Process (How you know it) Research points were related to the hypothesis and research question Questions related to the validity of the sources were answered thoroughly and properly Communication – Writing/Organization (How you express what you know) Spelling/Grammar Formal Essay Language Completion Works Cited APA Format – source citation Application – Final Product/Making Connections and Conclusions (How you use what you know) Specific conclusion on how the information relates to the hypothesis and research question
