Metal Jacket This flexible armour was made up of metal ribs held together with more metal ribs. They were so heavy that soldiers had to help each other to put them on. Tunic The tunic was worn underneath the armour. This was made of rough wool. It was not until later that short trousers were worn down below! Helmet Centurions and other Officers wore crests on the top of their helmets so that the other men could follow them in battle. The helmets helped to protect the head, face and neck in a battle. The soldier's main weapons were a short sword for stabbing and a long spear, or javelin for throwing. The javelin had a sharp iron point, and a thin, bendy stick. When it hit an enemy's shield, the point stuck in, but the stick bent. This made it difficult to pull out. The long stick got in the way, so the enemy soldier had to throw away his shield.
