{The Republic of Ireland}

Introduction Ireland is a country full of amazing culture and history. It is an island in the north Atlantic Ocean and is known for its free-spirited and friendly native people, its beautiful green landscapes and its art and music. Ireland's history spans thousands of years, but many of Ireland's great traditions from the past are present today.

Introduction Officially established in 1949, the independent Republic of Ireland takes up 80% of the island on which it is located. The capital of the Republic of Ireland is Dublin. The Irish have had a difficult history with struggles such as war and famine, but through it all they kept hope and cultivated a rich culture through song, dance, food, and other traditions.

Traditional Irish Food Ireland is well known for using the potato for much of it ’ s cooking. Not all food involves the potato, but because potatoes were inexpensive and could grow even in poor land, this food was very available and widely used during some difficult parts of Ireland ’ s history when food was hard to find.

Music, Storytelling, & Dancing One of Ireland's earliest traditions is the art of storytelling. Thousands of years ago, Irish storytellers told great tales of heroes, fairies, and the gods. About 400 AD, when writing was introduced to Ireland, many of the stories were recorded and new ones were created.

Music, Storytelling, & Dancing Some Irish musicians would create songs using these stories. Ireland's musical tradition began at the same time the storytelling began. The music of Ireland helped to shape much of Western music as it exists today. Traditional Irish music usually has strong and clear singing and cheerful music. Irish musicians play many different stringed instruments, many of which can be found in today's country music bands. Some Irish musicians would create songs using these stories. Irish Pubs Public houses in Ireland, usually known as pubs, are places licensed to serve alcoholic drinks. Irish pubs can be found in cities throughout the world. For decades, the Irish pub has been a social and community center for the people of Ireland. It functions as both a place to relax and drink alcohol as well as a place in which to meet and greet the local people. There is generally a very close understanding and informality between the customer and the bar staff and, in many cases, all of the regular customers will know each other very well.

Language English and Irish are the official languages of Ireland, with English being the dominant one. According to a 2006 survey, 39% of the population says they can communicate in Irish. Road signs are usually bilingual. Most public notices and newspapers and magazines are in English only. Most Government publications are available in both languages.
