Dr. J. M. Denison Secondary School SHSMSHSM

SHSM stands for Specialist High Skills Major A Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a specialized program which allows students to not only complete requirements for their high school diploma, but also obtain a special certificate in a specialized field The high school diploma and special certificate are completed at the same time.

 Specialized fields are known as SECTORS  The SHSM sectors at Dr. Denison include: Hospitality and Tourism Environment Business Construction

 When you graduate from High School, and you are enrolled in the SHSM program, you will receive a “red seal” on your diploma  This “red seal” is recognized by colleges, universities and various apprenticeship programs

 The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program is offered in all four pathways: Apprenticeship pathway College pathway University pathway Workplace pathway

 Students choose their grade 11 and grade 12 elective courses around their chosen sector (Business, Construction, Hospitality, or Environment)  Students will take a minimum of 1 sector (major)course in grade 11  Students will take a minimum of 1 sector (major) course in grade 12  Students need four sector courses in total: Combination: 1 grade 11 course and 3 grade 12 courses OR 3 grade 11 courses and 1 grade 12 course

 In addition to the courses selected in grades 11 and 12, students must take Co-op in either grade 11 or 12.  The Co-op placement will be in the student’s chosen sector. (Business, Environment, Construction, Hospitality & Tourism)  During the school day, students will go to “work” to earn high school credits and gain experience  Students can take either a 2, 3 or 4 credit Co-op program (half or full day)

In addition to choosing specific courses, SHSM students are given opportunities. The opportunities include: -Certification and Training (specific to sector – ie. CPR Training and Standard First Aid) -Experiential Learning (ie. Job shadowing) -Reach Ahead Opportunities (ie. Field trips, workshops, conferences)

1. You customize your education to suit your interest in a specific field. 2. You gain specialized skills and knowledge that are recognized by future employers. 3. You have a competitive edge over other students when applying for college or university admissions (because you have earned a SHSM Red Seal on your diploma). 4. You have specialized certifications and training.

1. You can apply right on Career Cruising when you select your courses. 2. You can see Mrs. Cherutti in the Co-op Office (room 305) or Mr. Young in the Guidance Office.
