Writing Money Using Cents A cent is the smallest unit used to represent money in Canada. When you write a money value using cents the number is a whole number (e.g., 12). The symbol for cents is “¢”, for example, 75¢ means 75 cents.

Writing Money Using Dollars 1 dollar equals 100 cents. When you write money values using dollars, the number usually includes two decimal places (e.g., 4.50). The symbol for the dollar is “$”. When you see $3.25 it means 3.25 dollars or 3 dollars and 25 cents.

Place Value The value of a digit can change based on its location in a number. That is called place value. When working in cents the numbers are whole numbers. In 84¢, the 4 is in the ones place value and represents 4 X 1 or 4¢ the 8 is in the tens place value and represents 8 X 10 or 80¢

Place Value In 325¢, the 5 is in the ones place value and represents 5 X 1 or 5¢ the 2 is in the tens place value and represents 2 X 10 or 20¢ the 3 is in the hundreds place value and represents 3 X 100 or 300¢ (this is also 3 dollars)

Place Value When using dollars, the numbers are usually decimal numbers. In $4.52, the 2 is in the hundredths place value and represents 2 hundredths of a dollar or 2¢ the 5 is in the tenths place value and represents 5 tenths of a dollar or 50¢ the 4 is in the ones place value and represents 4 dollars or $4

Writing Money Values You can write the same value of money in a number of different ways. 95¢ means the same thing as 95 cents or… .95 dollars or … $0.95

Writing Money Values Write 35 dollars and 15 cents two other ways. $35.15 3515¢
