Presentation transcript:

CHARACTERIZATION DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION - the writer makes direct statements about a character's personality and tells what the character is like. INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION - the writer reveals information about a character and his personality through that character's thoughts, words, and actions, along with how other characters respond to that character, including what they think and say about him.

JANE Direct Characterization Jane was a beautiful young girl. She had golden hair and blue eyes, which made her stand out from the rest. Indirect Characterization When Jane walked in the room, nobody could help but look at her stunning, gorgeous face. She commanded attention wherever she went due to her good looks.

FLOYD Direct Characterization: Floyd was a middle-aged investment banker in the midst of a mid-life crisis. He lived in a well-to-do neighborhood and was financially secure, but he was feeling frustrated and trapped by the monotony and routine in his life. Indirect Characterization Floyd truly lived for weekends. Nothing was better than putting his attaché case away in the hall closet and then heading out for a Saturday ride, leaving his wife in charge of taking their kids to soccer practice. Floyd floored it so his Corvette Stingray burned rubber as it tore out of his quiet cul-de-sac. His graying combover waved in the wind as he cruised with the top down, blaring “Free Bird” on his state-of-the-art sound system. Other motorists stared at him as he played air guitar at red lights and winked at the college girls in the crosswalk.

LINDA Direct Characterization Linda was a strong woman who lived her entire life on her own terms, without compromising and without ever being apologetic for anything. Indirect Characterization You would not expect Linda to do what other women would normally do. When she was eighteen, she ran away from home and got married to a thirty-nine year old painter. The marriage however did not last long. At the end of one year, Linda was left with a two month child and a divorce. This did not kill Linda's spirit though. She soon moved to the city and got herself a job as a tarot card reader.

JOHN Direct Characterization John cared a lot for the well-being of others. There was an old couple living alone near his house. John used to buy weekly groceries for them and even check on them everyday, just to see how they are doing. Indirect Characterization An old couple living near John's house considered him just like their own son. John did all that for them what even a son these days won't do. He would shop for them, get them things and say hello everyday.

JIM Direct Characterization Jim was an honest man. He never cheated anybody in his entire life. Indirect Characterization Jim was very unlike any other businessman. He made sure that all his clients got what they had paid for.
