Background: Samuel Taylor Coleridge ( ) English poet, critic and philosopher as well as leader of the romantic movement. In his poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” he describe that a sailor is hounded by disaster and supernatural forces after killing an albatross( 信天 翁 )

Listen to the first part and fill in the blanks. The English poet Coleridge once wrote a poem called “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”. A mysterious guest appears at a wedding and tells people a story. In the story, an sailor, or a mariner shoots a bird during the voyage. Other sailors are very angry and frightened, because, by killing the bird, bad luck and death are brought to all the mariners. Soon, things turn bad. There is water all around them, but it is too salty to drink. Driven by hunger and thirst, they begin to imagine some horrible things. What will happen next?

Listen to the next part and fill in the missing words. Two gods argue over what should happen to the ship and the mariners. Finally they agree that all sailors must die except the one who killed the bird. He must live through it and will pay by telling the story to the people he meets. That’ s what the guest tells the people at the wedding. Can you guest who the guest is? What can you learn from the story? All things that inhabit the natural world have their own value and beauty, and that it is necessary for man to recognize and respect these qualities.
