Welcome to West Park United Church of Christ

The selfless way of Christ Second Sunday of Lent

New Century Hymnal #205 Forty Days and Forty Nights

GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

Psalm 22:23-31

New Century Hymnal #182 We Have Come at Christ’s Own Bidding

Mark 9:2-9

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory, forever. Amen.

I ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory— to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally, your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is God is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life God has for followers, oh, the utter extravagance of God’s work in us who trust God—endless energy, boundless strength! Ephesians 1: 17-20

All this energy issues from Christ: God raised him from death and set him on a throne in deep heaven, in charge of running the universe, everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no power exempt from his rule.

To live a spiritual life means to become living Christ.

The Spiritual life presents us with a far more radical demand: to be living Christ here and now, and in time and history

What are the radical claims of Jesus Christ?

So how much are you a Christian?

Koinonia Farm

Jesus’ call to discipleship is primal, all encompassing, all –inclusive, demanding a total commitment.

Moving On UP

Well we're movin on up, To the east side. To a deluxe apartment in the sky. Movin on up, To the east side. We finally got a piece of the pie.

I am not denigrating ambition, nor am I against progress and success. But true growth is something other than the uncontrolled drive for upward mobility in which ambition no longer serves a wider ideal.

Downward Mobility

The great paradox which Scripture revels to us is that total freedom is only found through downward mobility

Philippians 2: 6-8 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

The whole life of Jesus of Nazareth was a life in which all upward mobility was resisted.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, Ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

New Century Hymnal #204 “Take Up Your Cross,” the Savior Said

I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. And, to make a right beginning of repentance and as a mark of our mortal nature…
