Who are Repak? Ireland’s only packaging compliance scheme. Repak began in 1997 when Irish packaging recycling rate was only 15%, it is now almost 70%! Based at the Red Cow junction in Dublin, with almost 2,400 members from across various sectors, e.g. Coca-Cola, Cadbury, Tesco, Musgraves, Green Isle, Gypsum and Kerry Group.

The role of preventandsave.ie: Repak employ two Packaging Technologists to help member companies reduce the amount of packaging they place on the market. Site surveys are carried out and recommendations written up into a confidential report. Part of the EPA-led ‘National Waste Prevention Programme’.

National Waste Prevention Programme: “Waste Prevention is to be preferred to any waste management option - do not generate the waste. By not generating waste, we can eliminate the need to handle, transport, treat and dispose of waste. We can also avoid having to pay for these services” – EPA. Set-up in 2004 and managed by the EPA. Aim to deliver substantive results on waste prevention and minimisation.

Repak’s P&S programme: The Packaging Waste Prevention Programme (PWPP) aims to assist Irish businesses with positive and practical ways to reduce packaging and to promote those achievements to a wider audience. Managed by Repak, Ireland’s only packaging compliance scheme. Two Packaging Technologists responsible for delivering the programme.

National Recycling Rates (Source: EPA & Eurostat): Comparison of Recycling Rates in Europe (Ireland, France and EU average).

Types of packaging - Primary: Primary packaging is that which surrounds the product when it is sold to the final consumer, e.g.

Types of packaging - Secondary: Secondary packaging is used to collate sales units for ease of handling in the selling environment, e.g.

Types of packaging - Tertiary: Tertiary packaging is used to facilitate handling and transportation of secondary packs, e.g.

Nike make use of recycled PET: Nike: For new team jerseys Nike use discarded water bottles destined for landfill sites, where they can take up to 500 years to decompose. This saves precious raw materials and reduces energy consumption by up to 30% compared to conventional fabrics.

Smurfit-Kappa & their use of recycled paper: Smurfit-Kappa: Most corrugated products from Smurfit Kappa have a recycled content rate of approximately 75%.

Irish Distiller’s Jameson whiskey bottle. Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard: IDPR use approximately 70% recycled glass for all their Jameson bottles, reducing the energy requirements dramatically.

Coca-Cola’s use of recycled aluminium & glass: Coca-Cola: Coca-Cola’s aluminium cans and glass bottles already contain up to 60% recycled content. By using recycled aluminium in cans, for example, they save up to 95% of the energy required when using virgin aluminium.
