Algebraic Expressions Level 4/5 Booster Lesson 6B Algebraic Expressions

evaluate equals symbol equation variable brackets simplify term Objectives: Understand that algebraic operations follow the same rules as arithmetic operations. Solve simple equations Transform information from words into algebraic expressions and equations. Vocabulary: evaluate equals symbol equation variable brackets simplify term expression

X + 7 = 22 T + 6 = 19 + R = 34 + W = 41 P - 14 = 27 G - 23 = 5 - H = 2 W/S 6.1B X + 7 = 22 T + 6 = 19 + R = 34 + W = 41 P - 14 = 27 G - 23 = 5 - H = 2 24 - L = 17 (X = 15) (T = 13) (R = 27) Solve the equations. (W = 22) (P = 41) (G = 28) (H = 12) (L = 7)

W/S 6.2B Find the missing numbers: 1. A number x is multiplied by 6, and you get 54. X = 9 2. Add 7 to a number y, double the answer and you get 20. Y = 3 3. Think of a number T, multiply it by itself and the answer is 36 T = 6 4. Think of a number z, square it, add 12 and then you get 21. Z = 3 5. Think of a number P, and then subtract 7. The answer is 25. P = 32

Expression in words: Expression in symbols: Add seven to a number. N + 7 Equation in symbols: Equation in words: N + 7 = 15 Add 7 to a number and you’ll get 15. When we give an expression in symbols it is called an algebraic expression.

W/S 6.3B Problems: Make each of the expressions below into algebraic expressions. 1. A number X is multiplied by 3 and then added to 20. (X x 3 + 20 usually written 3x + 20) 2. Take 6 away from T. ( T – 6 ) 3. Think of a number Y, double it, then subtract 7. ( Y x 2 – 7 usually written 2Y – 7 ) 4. Think of a number Z, square it then add 5. ( Z² + 5 ) 5. I think of a number ,G, add 2 and then multiply the answer by 3. ( G + 2 ) x 3 usually written 3 ( G + 2)

W/S 6.4B Make each of the statements below into algebraic equations. 1. I think of a number, M, multiply it by 3, and add 7and the answer is 16. 3M + 7 = 16 M = 3 2. I think of a number, double it, take 7 away and the answer is 3. 2N – 7 = 3 N = 5 3. I think of a number, add 3 and then multiply by 4. The answer is 24. 4 ( N + 3 ) = 24 N = 3 4. I think of a number, square it, take away 3 and the answer is 13. N² - 3 = 13 N = 4 In each of the questions above can you solve the equation.
