HL-LHC WP2 Brainstorming Meeting 1 Purpose of this meeting:  Introduce the main objectives of the new HL-LHC project: Prepare technical proposal by 2013 for a luminosity upgrade in the LHC by 2020 with goal of cm -2 sec -1 sustainable luminosity and integrated luminosity of 3000 fb -1 (merger of Phase 1 and sLHC upgrade projects).  Introduce the main objectives for WP2 of HL-LHC: Develop one to three baseline configurations for the upgrade (e.g. based on NbTi; Nb 3 Sn or hybrid technology).  Collect ideas and proposals for tasks within WP2: e.g. B-B studies for baseline configuration(s) (6D beam-beam, chaos onset, minimum required x-ing angle (  DA vs x-ing), with and without wire; CRAB cavities etc  Collect proposals of potential collaborators for WP2: EU members (EU funding); US (relation with USLARP?); other (required collaboration agreement?) O. Brüning – BE-ABP HL-LHC meeting 8. September 2010

HL-LHC WP 2 Brainstorming Meeting 2 Interesting Suggestions:  Introduce a Parameter and Layout Committee: Assure consistent sets of parameters for the pursued options.  Maintain a central website: Central repository with all related files and programs.  Evaluate need for formal collaboration agreements: e.g. KEK and TRIUMF O. Brüning – BE-ABP HL-LHC meeting 8. September 2010

HL-LHC Work Package 2 Brainstorming 3 Confirmed Collaboration interests:  Europe: Crockcroft: Andy Wolski, Maxim Korostelev, Deepa Angal-Kalinin, Rob Appleby, Kay Hock IFIC University Valencia: Angeles Faus-Golfe CEA Grenoble: NN  US: SLAC: Uli Wienands; Thomas Markiewicz FNAL: Vladimir Shiltsev +; Eric Prebis (USLARP) BNL: Wolfram Fischer; Rama Calaga  Asia: KEK: Kazuhito Ohmi O. Brüning – BE-ABP HL-LHC meeting 8. September 2010

HL-LHC Work Package 2 Brainstorming 4 Wished for Collaboration without confirmation:  Europe: INFN: e.g. Pantaleo Raimondi FZK: Anke Müller PSI-EPFL: Leonid Rifkin  Canada: Triumf: Fred Jones, Dobrin Kaltchev  Asia: KEK: Etienne Forest O. Brüning – BE-ABP HL-LHC meeting 8. September 2010

HL-LHC Work Package 2 Brainstorming 5 Issues for WP2:  NbTi versus Nb 3 Ti technology: different performance reach (  *, aperture, length etc.) shielding and aperture requirements close link with WP3 and WP5  Layout options: L * (close link with WP7) options for local correction of chromatic aberrations (triplet & IR layout) local CC installations (close link with WP4) 2-in-1 triplet design with large x-ing angle and CC (close link with WP4)  Beam parameter optimization: operational experience from LHC close link with Injector complex upgrade and consolidation Projects O. Brüning – BE-ABP HL-LHC meeting 8. September 2010

HL-LHC Work Package 2 Brainstorming 6 Tentative Task List: 1) Communication & management: 2) Optics & Layout: NbTi solutions with and without local CC; L * ; round and flat beams; 2-in-1 Nb 3 Sn solutions with and without local CC; L * ; round and flat beams; 2-in-1 Novel solutions for correction of chromatic aberrations (a la SF & PR) IR4 layout and solution with global CC  magnet parameters (aperture and length) 3) Single particle studies: DA studies and FQ specifications Correction strategy and corrector specifications  magnet parameters (FQ and corrector elements) O. Brüning – BE-ABP HL-LHC meeting 8. September 2010

HL-LHC Work Package 2 Brainstorming 7 Tentative Task List: 4) Collective Effects: BB long range compensation schemes BB limit for round and flat beams and coupling tolerances for flat beams Head-on BB compensation schemes and options Impedance estimates for new layout (collimator and aperture dependent) IBS estimates for different beam configurations  beam separation; optimum configuration (flat beams vs round beams) 5) Beam Parameters and Luminosity optimization: L reduction and leveling (CC and poor man leveling via x-ing angle) Evaluation of operation experience of first 2 year LHC operation Options for beam parameter variation for L optimization during run (e.g. Q)  beam parameter set (  n, N b,  s etc.) O. Brüning – BE-ABP HL-LHC meeting 8. September 2010
