Pilot study on inventory and condition of stock of materials at risk at UNESCO cultural heritage sites Prepared by the Sub-Center for stock of materials at risk and Culturale Heritage XXXIX Session of WGE 26 – 29 September 2011, Geneve

What in this study we are going to do? - We need to evaluate the corrosion end soiling effect of air pollution on the five selected monuments, included in the UNESCO list. - The monuments are situated in different geographic and meteo climatic areas in Europe. - After we will evaluate the economic effect of the restauration intervents - We will propose maintains intervals for some CH materials.

During the last ICP Materials meeting in Prague (6-8 April 2011) was decided to select five UNESCO sites that can be used for this case study. Some of the monuments are very complex.

The National Library in Prage (The Klementinum)

The banks of Seine - Paris

The town of Bath - UK

Acropolis – Athens

Neues Museum - Berlin

To may elaborate the study it is important to use the same methodology for all selected sites. 1.From the ICP M. (CULT STRAT EU Project) elaboration of UNESCO European level CH list we will take the exact location of the monuments. 2.From UNESCO CH list we will extract all available information regarding the monument, the period, the stile and materials of building etc. We will need of images of the monument, photos etc. 3.We will need to have a general description of the area in which the monuments are situated. In this way we may identify the presence of traffic, industries etc. 4.It is important to have the dimensions of the monuments and surfaces of the walls, windows, doors and roof. A.

6. After we will need of evaluation of the main materials used: stone, bricks, glass etc. in the monument, with evaluation of percents of the single type material presence outside the building. In this way we may calculate surface covered from the single materials. (ICP M. (CULT STRAT EU Project)). 7. We will use the DRF to evaluate the corrosion and soiling effects on the single monument and material. 8. Applying the indicative price list of the restoration works we will calculate the cost for Maintenance and Repair. (ICP M. (CULT STRAT EU Project)). 9. We will give indications of the propose maintains intervals for some CH materials (ICP M. (CULT STRAT EU Project)). 10. Establishment of a critical levels of damage when the corrosion is higher then the tolerable corrosion rate. 11. Propose some measures to be adopted to prolong the maintains intervals for restoration works for the single monument. B.
