e-Learning; what it is, and how it affects the new world Koik Shuh Jie

What is e-Learning? Used to be known as online learning. Also known as CBT (Computer-Based Training), IBT (Internet-Based Training), WBT (Web- Based Training) and virtual learning. Mostly referred to as e- Learning. But a variety of spelling are also accepted as it condones the same intended meaning.

The term e-Learning can be made up of a lot more than online learning, virtual learning, distributed learning, networked or web-based learning. The letter “e” in e-learning stands for the word “electronic”. Therefore, e-Learning would include all educational activities that are carried out by individuals/ groups working online or offline through computers or tablet/ smart phones with the use of the internet.

e-Learning can be defined as gaining knowledge and/or educating through the use of electronics. e-Learning is basically referred to the use of the computer or tablet/ smart phones and the internet for communication through communicative technology in order to transfer the skills and knowledge involved in one’s field. With the use of internet, it involves Web-based learning and also virtual education.

E-learning is growing in popularity in all areas and levels of education and training. E-learning affords opportunities to design learning environments that are authentic, situated in the learning context, and also problem-based in order to provide students with “learning by doing” experiences.

Who uses e-Learning? People of the world Most of the e-Learning participants are of tertiary education level (college, university). Public universities and private universities alike are active in using e-Learning as a learning tool. Some secondary schools participate but have yet to succeed. Also used in the business sector for training purposes.

Tertiary Education in e-Learning

When, Where and How e-Learning enables learners and educators alike to enquire knowledge and impart knowledge at their preferred time and location with ease. It can be self-paced and also instructor-led.

Tools used for e-Learning Tools such as video/audio, animation, social networking sites, blogs, online games and CD-ROM, all with the use of text, are used in this area.
