Presentation transcript:

The following 3 Alabama slides were lifted from Alabama’s Cyberinfrastructure presentation at EPSCOR meeting in KY in October. There was no one from Alabama at the meeting. The person who gave the presentation used to be, but now works at Clemson. Here is a link to the University of Alabama System Regional Optical Network (UAS-RON) that David forward in October. &releaseID=589 Looks like The Huntsville and Birmingham campuses are already connected to each other and to I2 and NLR, and that there are plans to link in Tuscaloosa, too.

Auburn Tuscaloosa Huntsville Birmingham Mobile 150 Mbs 10 Gbs State Research Network 2

Alabama Research and Education Network (AREN) AREN provides Internet access for Alabama state government, four- year universities, two-year colleges, K-12 schools, and libraries. Legislative appropriations from the Alabama Education Trust Fund provide this access at no cost to a limited number of public schools and colleges. Customers from private schools, 'general fund' state agencies and commercial customers continue to pay fully for services at standard rates. 3

Alabama Campus Networks UAB campus backbone is 10 Gbs –Internet2 is OC3 ATM (150Mbps) –Internet1 is 150Mbps UAH campus backbone is 10 Gbs –10 Gb connection to National Lambda Rail –OC3 ATM to Internet2 –45Mb or 55Mb commodity Internet (through AREN and ISPs) Alabama Regional Optical Network (RON) operated by Southern Light Rail expected live in 2007 Auburn campus backbone is fiber optic –Internet2 is OC3 ATM 4

The following 4 Kentucky slides were lifted from Al Lind’s presentation at EPSCOR meeting in KY in October. I’m sure Al would be glad to give you and update! On the timeline, etc.

The following South Carolina slides were lifted from SC’s presentation at EPSCOR meeting in KY in October.

Here is an article from March 07 about the SC House of Representatives providing 1.5 million to each of 3 universities in SC to pursue this. Not sure if that ended up being signed into law. – JH

From Tennessee’s presentation I am not sure exactly what hope springs eternal means in this next slide. I talked with the guy who gave this presentation (Tennesee’s EPSCOR officer), and asked him whether Tennesee’s research universities were already connected via fiber. He saidyes, but I don’t know. Not sure what “upon completion” means on the next slide.JGH. The second slide I pulled from a 2006 presentation I found by Doug Hurley. Not sure when the five year plan was to start and end, and what the status is. I got the idea from the UT guy I spoke with at EPSCOR that the plan had notgone so well. Thus, the Hope Springs Eternal comment. - JGH

Hope Springs Eternal

The OneTenn network with storage depots directly attached. 4 year sites will connect at 10Gbps; 2 year sites will connect at 2.4 Gbps. Total storage available in aggregate ~ 1PB. Approximately 550 TB's distributed among twelve 4-year schools, 140 TB's at 13 2-year campuses, and 340 TB's at the Tennessee Technology Centers and early adopter P-12 sites. While the Tech Centers and participating P-12 sites, are not connected to the backbone, and hence not shown on the map, the depots at their sites will facilitate their participation and increase their ability to benefit from OneTenn, especially in the area of multimedia content and video distribution. The OneTenn infrastructure upon completion of the five year plan
