3 NEES NextGen Webpath NextGen Webpath will be developed to: –Provide a platform for H-Nonlin access by students –Allow easy access to NEES research –Function as a learning tool for students –Function as a recruitment tool –These objectives will be accomplished using five modules which are discussed in detail in the following slides The NextGen Webpath webpage can be found at: /NextGen-WebPath/home.html /NextGen-WebPath/home.html

4 NEESR-NextGen Modules Five Modules that will be Developed as Part of the NEESR-NextGen Program –Module 1: NEESR-NextGen HS –Module 2: NEESR-NextGen MEP –Module 3: NEESR-NextGen Pro –Module 4: NEESR-NextGen FSU –Module 5: NEESR-NextGen Dyna Promote Engineering to High School Students Keep Students Active using Various Progressive Modules throughout their Academic Careers

5 Module 1: NEESR-NextGen HS Module Goal –Recruit High School Students into Engineering What is It? –Four-Week Summer Program Promoted Annually at Several High Schools and Junior High Schools in the Fresno Area Teams of 3 Students will be Created –(e.g., 1 HS freshman, 1 HS sophomore, 1 HS junior) –Each Group will be Guided through Learning Tutorials Available on a New Interactive Website (NEESR- NextGen-WebPath)

6 Module 2: NEESR-NextGen MEP Module MEP: Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement (Mesa) Engineering Program –Eligible for New Freshman (Increase Recruitment) Hispanic, African-American, or Native American Heritage College-earning 2-credit Summer Course that works in Parallel with the Existing Engineering Pathways Summer program MEP Module will Enhance the Study Skills and Leadership Skills Offered Simultaneously with the NEESR-NextGen HS module

7 Module 3: NEESR-NextGen Pro Module Has a Career-Building Focus Developed in Conjunction with Local Engineering Practitioners –Program will Award Summer Internship Opportunities to Qualified Sophomores and Juniors Students must have First Completed NEESR-NextGen HS and/ or NEESR- NextGen MEP Modules Students will be selected by Local Engineering Practitioners

8 Module 4: NEESR-NextGen FSU Module Designed for Junior or Seniors Module will Consist of NextGen Learning Step Tutorials Integrated into Two Undergraduate Courses –Timber Structures (CE 136) –Reinforced Concrete Design (CE 132) Use NEESR-NextGen-WebPath to Simulate Three Protected Timber Homes or R/C Bridges –Simulation Results will be Compared to a Suite of Actual Seismic Lab Test Results (3 Timber-Tested Homes and 3 R/C Bridges), Funds Permitting

9 Module 5: NEESR-NextGen Dyna Module Lab Component of Dynamics of Structures Course –Graduate Students Currently Develop Computer Simulation Programs (MDOF) Program Codes Verified/ Experimentally-Tested –Wood Homes or Steel Frames, Funds Permitting –Tests would be shown live in Web-Enhanced Classrooms via NEESR-NextGen-WebPath –Video would be Shown to Local High Schools Recruiting Tool for Potential Students Entering Upcoming Next NEESR-NextGen HS module

10 Preliminary Shake Table Demonstrations Two demonstrations of the shake table have been performed one of which is presented (in part) on the next slide The purpose of these tests were: –To generate interest from current students –To use as a recruitment aid for future students

12 Future Goals Future goals include: –High School Student Recruitment –Perform Additional Shake Table Tests July ’09: One wood frame home, approximately 10ft. in height, weighing about 4,000 pounds –Embed Test Data into H-NONLIN –Make H-NONLIN Web Accessible –Generate Online Training Platform For Students As Part Of NextGen Webpath (NextGen Learning Steps)
