RHYTHM & REPETITION

RHYTHM Rhythm is the principle of design that indicates movement by the repetition of elements.

is found in all the arts: RHYTHM is found in all the arts: Music Dance Poetry Theater

RHYTHM IN MUSIC Is created by the measure of time between musical sounds. Beats are followed by rests.

RHYTHM IN POETRY The repetition of words, sounds and phrases creates rhythm in poetry.

VISUAL RHYTHM is rhythm you receive through your eyes rather than through your ears.

VISUAL RHYTHM is created by repeated positive shapes separated by negative spaces.

VISUAL RHYTHM IS EVERYWHERE: Books lined up on a bookshelf. Cars in a parking lot. People in line. Each person is a positive shape, and the space between each person is a negative space.

VISUAL RHYTHM Suggests Movement

VISUAL RHYTHM Creates a sensation of movement. Rhythms cause the viewer’s eyes to follow the visual beats through a work of art.

REPETITION Rhythm results from Repetition. Motif and Pattern are often used to talk about Repetition in art.

MOTIF A motif is a unit that is repeated in visual rhythm.

ASSIGNMENT: Repeat a Motif (a gesture drawing) to create visual rhythm.

STEPS: Select gesture drawing(s) for motif. Cut out figure(s) to use as template. Repeat motif across the paper to create visual rhythm. Arrange your space well. (composition)

GRADING Motifs - use of positive shapes Repetitions - fill negative space Rhythm - show movement Composition - effective arrangement of shapes
