YEAR 9 PSD In the News….. L/Q: What are the risks of using a mobile phone?

Starter… Feedback to the class. What risks have you heard of ? List these in your books and make a note of the SOURCE of your information… E.g…..T.V NEWS

The following slides show a number of risks which have been highlighted recently in the media. If you don’t read newspapers or watch the news on TV, you miss out on important information.

Risk #1 1/6 mobile phones are contaminated with faecal matter. The London School of Hygiene at University of London analysed 780 samples, and 16% of them were contaminated with E.coli of a faecal origin. Why? It turns out that many people don't wash their hands after using their toilet, and studies show that "men wash hands less often than women in public bathrooms."

Risk #2 m/watch?v=umRXAkZ8 Xo0 m/watch?v=umRXAkZ8 Xo0 Many of us like to text while walking to lessons….. Walking across busy roads… In situations where we NEED to FOCUS !

Risk #3 m/watch?v=pqIZDIxJgX w&feature=related m/watch?v=pqIZDIxJgX w&feature=related Is the radiation powerful enough to damage your brain?

Mobile phone use 'raises children's risk of brain cancer fivefold' Alarming new research from Sweden on the effects of radiation raises fears that today's youngsters face an epidemic of the disease in later life.

One professional opinion. n.com/video/xea7xa_do es-cellphone-use-lead- to-cancer_lifestyle#rel- page-6 n.com/video/xea7xa_do es-cellphone-use-lead- to-cancer_lifestyle#rel- page-6

Another opinion… m/watch?v=kcPh6F7_Zf s m/watch?v=kcPh6F7_Zf s

So… where are we? Who do we believe? Why don’t mobiles come with a health warning ? Let’s look at some data.

Global mobile phones sales soared 43pc to 417m in the three months to the end of September, as demand for smartphones, such as Apple's iPhone, showed no signs of abating. Globally, Apple sold 13.5m phones, making it the world's fourth biggest mobile manufacturer, ahead of Research in Motion, home of the BlackBerry. Carolina Milanesi, Gartner's director of mobile phone research, said the iPhone had "fundamentally changed" the mobile phone market. "Apple is massive," she said. "Especially if you consider how much the phones cost [the cheapest pay-as-you-go iPhone4 sells for £480]." There are 71.2m mobiles in the UK - 10m more than the population, because many people own more than one phone. Data for December 2011

Apple’s i-phone sales million phones x £ 480 = £ 648 BILLION.

That’s a lot of money for phone companies… But surely the Government would stop this if there was a reason ? We know that cars pollute the air. We know that smoking causes cancer. We know that alcohol in excess can kill. For each one of the above the Government receives a % in tax.

MAKE YOUR MIND UP TIME. On a scrap of paper… Decide what you think about this. Use a colour to show your decision. Your teacher will pass round a bag.Pop your paper in the bag.Follow the code opposite. I don’t think there’s a problem. I’m not sure – I’ll investigate this. I think there’s a real problem here – I’ll investigate and feedback to the class.
