Young Physicists Panel Closing Report for Survey Project John Krane Iowa State University DPF Executive Committee Meeting 5/24/02

John Krane -- Iowa State University The Birth of YPP Contribute to long-term HEP planning Write a document? – We had divergent opinions – Fairly homogenous demographics Global Survey – Reach more labs, more people Snowmass – Perform survey there? – Present results there? – How about both! How do you know you dont live in a pocket of like-minded people? May 2000 YPP formed by Bonnie Fleming, John Krane, Geralyn Sam Zeller ~ 15 members in original group Young = non-tenured

John Krane -- Iowa State University Survey Design Cast net widely All labs, all career stages Focus on helping HEPAP US-centric by design Statistician from U. Maryland School of Medicine Dr. Deborah Medoff specializes in creation and review of surveys for psychiatric studies. Release the data ntuples available!

John Krane -- Iowa State University Thanks for supporting YPP! DPF provided Web link on the front page Fellowships that allowed travel to Snowmass01

John Krane -- Iowa State University At Snowmass: YPP and YPF In our early discussions with Ken Bloom (YPF chair) we suggested a three-part format: Week 1: Intro and outline Week 2: Town Meeting (not pre-prepared talks, actual information-gathering) Week 3: Forum (delivery of results from TM and Survey) YPs are highly organized contagious collegial attitude Doing a great thing Never seen this happen before YPP Survey Philosophy: dont just listen to the loud and the eloquent. Overheard at Snowmass and elsewhere…

John Krane -- Iowa State University Survey Release We did what we said we would, and had fun doing it… Survey writeup went to HEPAP subpanel in time for their Santa Fe meeting (Sept. 2001) Timely! A great deal of interest outside of HEPAP Invited talks at FNAL (webcast archived at ) SLAC CERN DESY BNL LNS Princeton, Rutgers

John Krane -- Iowa State University Original Project Ends The original organizers have stepped aside. The friendships forged at Snowmass propel the new YPP. New Projects Begin… Young Particle Physicists
