Include the following expenses in your budget: Food Child care Medical Housing Transportation Other Expenses About how much would you need per month and per year for a single person and a family of 4? How much would you need to make per hour (40 hours a week) to cover expenses?

Based on the chart how much were your budgeting estimations off by? How difficult would it be to live on minimum wage in SR? How difficult would it be for a family of 4 even if both parents were making minimum wage?? How close are you to poverty when you’re making minimum wage?

Poverty

Who is poor? The poverty rate: Is the percentage of people that live in households below the official poverty line. The poverty line an income threshold which represents the limit of a livable wage.

Persons in Family 48 Contiguous States and D.C.AlaskaHawaii 1$10,890$13,600$12, ,710 18,380 16, ,530 23,160 21, ,350 27,940 25, ,170 32,720 30, ,990 37,500 34, ,810 42,280 38, ,630 47,060 43,270 For each additional person, add 3,820 4,780 4,390

Causes of Poverty Lack of Education Those without a high school diploma make on avg. slightly over the poverty line. Without access to good young people are much more likely to be impoverished. Location Some areas have much higher employment rates than others. High crime rates can lead to greater difficulty to achieve success. Shifts in Family Structure Single parenting and divorce lead to greater expenses and higher rates of child poverty.

Income distribution How a nations total income is distributed amongst the population. Lorenz Curve

What are some of the problems with the way the poverty rate is currently calculated? Describe what the SPM is? “There will be winners and losers and thus the politics of this are not inconsequential” What does this final quote mean? Who will be winners and who losers? WSJ article: New Way of Calculating Poverty Rate Faces Hurdles

What advantages do you have in your life in terms of supporting your success? short term poverty effects and which have long term poverty effects There are numerous factors that lead to poverty. In groups you will be given a topic and you are to come up with ways in which this topic can play a roll in poverty. Look back at your list and mark which issues have: Do you think that some members of society are more vulnerable than others to these circumstances? Why or why not?

Poverty continued

The Poverty Rate for white americans in 2010 was 13% The Poverty Rate for African americans in 2010 was 27.4% and Latinos 26.6% If you are born black or Latino in the US there is great than a 1 in 4 chance that you will experience poverty.

Obviously there is a link between Race and Poverty... Think back to our last day of class. What were some of the issues we discussed that may lead one to poverty? Which of these are less likely to affect non-dominant groups (groups that have historically been oppressed)? What might make it tough for non-dominant groups to rise out of their circumstances? Which of these circumstances are these groups in control of and which are institutionalized (out of their power to change)?

One of the most important institutional factors that lead future success or poverty are schools. One main indicator as to a schools educational level are access to AP classes and exams.

Which School do you think offers the Most AP classes in our district? Maria CarrilloElsie Allen 17 AP CLasses 9 AP CLasses

What do these number tell us about the connection between race, location, and educational opportunities in our own community? How do you guys feel about this numbers? Are they fair, right, make sense?
