Events that Lead to the Space Race The U.S. and the USSR was competing for supremacy in outer space exploration. Both believed that it was necessary for their national security and was symbolic of technological/ideological superiority.

Origins (WWII) Space Race began in Nazi Germany (1930s) Started + continued through WWII Germany was building Ballistic Missles 1930s, German aerospace engineers experimented with liquid-fueled rockets Also created V-2 rocket supersonic speed used to take over ENGLAND

ORIGINS(WWII + ROCKET TEAMS ASSEMBLED) V2 was a very powerful rocket unstoppable!! 1 st rocket to take photos from outer space 1949 Army's first operational medium-range ballistic missile, the Redstone rocket Led to launch both America's first satellite, and the first piloted Mercury space missions. It became the basis for both the Jupiter and Saturn family of rockets

Ballistic Missiles A missile with a long range (greater than 5,500 km or 3,500 miles) typically designed for nuclear weapons delivery.

USSR August 21, Intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) October 4, 1957 – First artificial satellite November 3, 1957 – First animal orbit (dog) September 14, 1959 – Probe to Moon April 12, 1961 – Human in orbit

USA January 31, 1958 – First US satellite December 18, 1958 – First communications satellite February 17, 1959 – weather satellite August 7, 1959 – Photo of Earth from space July 10, 1962 – First active communications satellite with AT&T.
