Conflict With Mexico

Mexico Mexico wins independence from Spain in 1821 Stephen Austin’s father, Moses Austin was the Spanish governor of Texas who granted him the land. Who knows a school named after Stephen F. Austin? What religion did most of the colonists practice at this time? Which group of people were also practicing Roman Catholicism in America? Most Americans were still against Roman Catholicism. The colonists saw an opportunity to produce cotton. Most were pro-slavery. Mexican ban was put in place in 1830. Picture ideas: something resembling Roman Catholicism (cross or people praying…anything like that), cotton or something resembling slavery.

Santa Anna General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna Became president in 1833 Declared dictatorship

Foundation of Texas 1820: Stephen Austin starts colony of Texas with 300 Americans Tejanos: Texans of Mexican descent Tejanos also wanted to give less power to the central government (pro-democracy). Santa Anna wanted a strong central government, with him in charge. Santa Anna overturned Mexico’s democratic constitution. Stephen Austin urged Texans to revolt against the Mexican government.

Rules for Texans No Slavery Must be Catholic

The Alamo Republic of Texas created in 1836 Santa Anna attacked the Alamo Siege lasted 12 days Does anyone know what city the Alamo was located in? Around 185 Anglo-Americans and Tejanos defended the Alamo. Held of the Mexican Army for 12 days. Eventually, all the defenders were killed in battle or executed afterward. This video is the trailer of the newer movie, The Alamo (2:20). Picture ideas: the Alamo, Santa Anna. http://www.youtube.c om/watch?v=u9T5HMtr 0WA

Texan Revolution Lasted just over six and a half months Sam Houston Led surprise attack at San Jacinto Lasted 18 minutes Forced Santa Anna to sign treaty to recognize Texan Independence Sam Houston was the commander of the Texan forces. Attack was on Santa Anna’s army at San Jacinto, Texas. Only took 18 minutes to capture Santa Anna. Santa Anna was forced to sign a treaty recognizing Texan independence. Took a decade to annex Texas. Public opinion…South wanted Texas to be a slave state. North wanted westward expansion without slaves. Texas did not want to be controlled by anyone (Mexico, Spain, or the US). Insert video clip in here. Picture ideas: the Alamo, Sam Houston

Annexation Texas was annexed in 1845 Tensions were rising between America and Mexico. James K. Polk, an expansionist, won the Election of 1844. He was in favor of annexation and negotiated a deal with Britain to divide Oregon. Treaty signed by Santa Anna said the southern Texas border was the Rio Grande. Mexico claimed it was the Nueces River (farther to the north). Picture ideas: Proposed state lines of Texas, Oregon Territory. For sure have a picture of southern Texas with the Nueces River and the Rio Grande.

Mexican War Polk attempted to pay Mexico for territories Polk sent army into disputed territory to provoke Mexico Polk officially declared war Southerners and Westerners were in favor of war. Northerners were not.

Invasion of Mexico Army lead by General Zachary Taylor went into Mexico General Winfield Scott captured Veracruz then forced Mexican army into Mexico City. Final Battle at Chapultepec Treaty of Guadalupe was signed

Achieving Manifest Destiny Mexican cession included California, Nevada, Utah, parts of Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. US paid 18 million. Gadsden Purchase of 1853 Manifest Destiny: expanding throughout the continent. Polk sent a representative, Nicholas Trist, to help General Winfield Scott negotiate a treaty with Mexico. Mexican Cession included: California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. Gadsden Purchase: US pays Mexico $10 million for small areas of southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. This video is the story of us from the History Channel (2:37).
