Human Rights and HIV/AIDS in Tanzania Maria Tungaraza POLICY Tanzania TD Week 2002

Tanzania No human rights laws currently in place specifically address HIV/AIDS National Policy on HIV/AIDS, 2001 exists, but needs improvement

Assessment of Law Related to HIV/AIDS and Human Rights Examined

Assessment Findings: Since the rise of the epidemic, statutes, law amendments, and case laws have not addressed HIV/AIDS issues.

Public health legislations lags behind the challenges of HIV/AIDS and human rights

Stigmatization and discrimination of PLWHAs is experienced at the community level and in different settings

Customary law and harmful traditional practices still put women at risk of infection and transmission of HIV

Sexual abuse and sexual violence, still common for children and other vulnerable groups, show clearly that human rights are not fully protected

As the diversity of the epidemic becomes more apparent, it becomes evident that there is no one size fits all legal framework

What has POLICY done? Helped establish TAPAC (the Tanzanian Parliamentarians AIDS Coalition) Helped develop Advocacy Network Against AIDS in Tanzania (ANAT)
