Isaiah 53 The Prophecy begins at verse 13 of Chapter 52 His glory is revealed in its opening Declarations The Atonement is clearly defined, including both aspects of sin The Work of our Saviour is Beautifully Revealed

Behold My Servant - Isaiah 52:13 “Servant” – A title of Messiah - Isaiah 42:1; 49:6; Ezekiel 34:23. This verse is echoed in Philippians 2:5-11. Deal Prudently – “Prosper” by Rotherham. The Kingdom inferred – Jeremiah 23:5 Hebrew “Sakal” wise in Daniel 12:3, 10. Knowledge caused him to prosper, 53:10-11.

“As Many” The Suffering and Glory Compared Verse 14 – The Suffering was great. He was despised and rejected – Psalm 22:6-7 Verse 15 – The Glory will be great. He endured much, and will be glorified much – Isaiah 49:6-7; 51:5 Verse 15 - Quoted in Romans 15:21 in relation to the gospels belief amongst the gentiles. Which adds to the meaning of 53:1!

“Who hath Believed” Many of the Gentiles did - 52:15 But Israel rejected him – John 12:37-38; Romans 10:16 “Our Report” – “Doctrine” in Isaiah 28:9 –Israel was looking or a Messiah, but would not believe Messiah’s doctrine – John 7:16-17, The Report of Suffering – 1 Peter 1:10-11

“The Arm of Yahweh” Yahshua was Yahweh’s arm – John 1:14 –His hand did the Fathers work – v.10 His arm could have saved them – Isaiah 59:1; Romans 1:16 “Revealed” – Hebrew “Galah” – denude in disgrace, to exile. When Yahweh does this, it is for judgment – cp. 52:10. Isaiah 5:13

“A Tender Plant” “Before Him” – Only His Father truly Knew him – 1 Peter 2:4; Matthew 3:17 “Tender Plant” – “Yoneq”, a twig, sucker, a sapling. Similar descriptions in Isaiah 11:1-3; Jeremiah 23:5; Zech 6:12 A sapling denotes his humble origin – Mark 6:3; Romans 8:3; Philippians 2:6-7

“Out of a Dry Ground” Israel was devoid of Truth – Psalm 63:1; Jeremiah 2:13; Amos 8:11 This was an unnatural result – Isaiah 49:1-2. Yahshua overcame that which was natural – Hebrews 4:15 WE also must overcome that which is natural to inherit the Kingdom of Yahweh – John 15:16

Messiah’s Beauty Rotherham – “He had neither beauty nor majesty,—When we beheld him, there was nothing to behold, that we should desire him” Israel did not desire him – But there was a beauty to desire in his righteousness and character – 2 Timothy 4:8; John 6:66-68

“A Man of Sorrows” He was despised and rejected - Psalm 69:19-20, 29.; John 1:10-11 Hebrews 4:15 – Our grief and sorrow is the nature bear and the sin that comes there from We should be men and women of sorrows as well – Philippians 3:8-10; 1 Peter 4:13 What do we esteem? - Hebrews 11:26

“He hath Borne our Griefs” NASB – ‘Surely our griefs he himself bore” – Romans 8:3; Hebrews 2:14-16 Matthew shows that sickness is inferred – Matthew 8:17 How has our sickness been borne – Isaiah 33:24; Psalm 103:3 Sickness and sin – Deuteronomy 28:21-22, 28

“Wounded for our Transgressions” “Chalah”, to pierce – by thorns, by nails, by spear. Transgressions is “Pesha”, moral revolt, rebellion Iniquities is “Avon”, moral perversity, thus applicable to only ourselves – Romans 3:24-26, 4:25

“The Chastisement that made us whole” “Of our peace” – Shalom, RSV “made us whole” the idea is to be of ONE. True oneness with the Father starts with being in the Son, and develops as we learn of him and develop a character that reflects his own – Ephesians 2:12-17; Colossians 1:20-21; Hebrews 13:20

“With His Stripes We are Healed” Quoted in 1 Peter 2:24 How was our sin in his body? Cp. V6 “Laid on him the iniquity of us all” – 2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 8:3, Hebrews 2:14-16 Peter says we “should live unto righteousness”, showing that both death and life are necessary for salvation, they are dependant one on another – Romans 6:1-4. “It is not enough merely to die unto sin, there is a need to build into our lives a Divine likeness”

“With His Stripes We are Healed” “Stripes “Chabburah” – a weal, blueness, Proverbs 20:30, Matthew 27:26 His blueness was only efficacious because His character was perfect - Numbers 15:38-39 cp. With Matthew 9:20-22 Our healing dependant on our faith and action, do we reach out for righteousness? – 1 Peter 2:25. Our healing began with baptism, but is completed at immortality, Philippians 3:21

“A Lamb to the Slaughter” The Lamb of God – John 1:29; 1 Peter 1:18-19; 1 Corinthians 5:7 Why the Lamb and not the Shepherd? – The symbol connects him to his brethren – Hebrews 2:14-16 Slaughter – cp. “Cut off” from v8. Daniel 9:26 “covenanted” A violent Death predicted, a natural death not acceptable. 1 Corinthians 15:23-24; Genesis 3:15

John 3:3; 1 Corinthians 4:15 “Prolong His Days” – Psalm 72:17, 21:1-7
