Mental Health is a strategic priority for Nottingham

Nottingham has high levels of risk factors for poor mental health High unemployment Low educational attainment High levels of deprivation Physical health problems Children in care Violence Homelessness

We measure wellbeing each year in Nottingham as part of the Citizens Survey using WEMWBS ONS measures of personal wellbeing: fewer people score highly on life satisfaction and feeling worthwhile than in the UK ?? How is wellbeing measured in the homeless/ vulnerably housed population of Nottingham. Mental wellbeing in Nottingham

Up to 1 in 2 of the citizens of Nottingham will have problems with their mental health at some point in their life Most families will be affected Estimate over 51,000 adults and 3,400 school age children affected at any time in Nottingham Half of out of work disability benefits are due to mental health problems Mental health problems are very common

Long term mental health problems A cause as well as a consequence of inequality Stigma/ discrimination is an important factor There can be economic, relationships, housing impact Carers / family and friends issues Recovery approach. ‘hope, control and opportunity’

Links between mental health and physical health King’s Fund, Centre for Mental Health

Death rates of people known to mental health services compared to the wider population Local calculations show death rates approximately 3.5 times higher than the wider population. Majority of deaths respiratory, circulatory and cancer

The Health and Wellbeing Board has agreed to: ‘Parity of Esteem’ valuing mental health equally with physical health Mental health champions in all member organisations to steer the strategy All board papers need to include reference to the mental health aspects
