Our 2 The Care Quality Commission Our new approach to regulating Health and Social Care Services

3 Our purpose and role Our purpose We make sure health and social care services provide people with safe, effective, compassionate, high-quality care and we encourage care services to improve Our role We monitor, inspect and regulate services to make sure they meet fundamental standards of quality and safety and we publish what we find, including performance ratings to help people choose care 3

4 The new approach

5 Chief Inspectors and their specialist teams HospitalsAdult Social CarePrimary and Integrated Care Professor Mike RichardsAndrea SutcliffeProfessor Steve Field Teams inspect: Acute Ambulance Community health Mental health services Care homes Hospices Home care agencies Supported living services GP practices Out-of-hours services Dentists Prison healthcare, Healthcare in childrens’ services

6 Five Key Questions for all services: Safe? Effective? Caring? Responsive to people’s needs? Well-led?

Ratings and reports We are introducing ratings to tell you whether an organisation and its main services are: Outstanding Good Requires improvement Inadequate We publish reports after every inspection setting out what we have found. This includes examples of good practice as well as areas for improvement. 7

8 CQC – working with the public Raise awareness and understanding of CQC’s role and purpose. Engage the public in our shape & design Provide high quality information about care services Listen to, and act on people’s views and experiences of care.

9 Working with community organisations We involve community and voluntary organisations through: Our work with the Healthwatch Network Our online community and planning groups The SpeakOut network – a national network of groups who work with less listened to communities who advise on policy and run activities prior to inspections Community groups can also: Tell us about the experiences of people who use services – good and bad Look out for CQC ‘listening events’ which we hold prior to some major inspections Encourage members of the community to feed in their experiences of care at:
