2 Module Objective Module objective:  To read current research articles in HCI / IS  To discuss, learn research theories, methods and findings in HCI / IS  To review research papers  To write a research proposal on a HCI / IS topic  To collect data and conduct data analysis (if time and resources permit).

3 What is HCI / IS? What is HCI?  The study of how humans interact with computers to perform some tasks. user studies, psychological studies, ergonomics interface design, low level (keystrokes), high level (decision support / purchase support) models, task analysis, GOMS computer devices & characteristics: e.g. mobile, mouse  The study of how humans interact with other humans through computers (HCHI) individuals, groups, distributed collaboration, communications, co-shopping, gaming

4 What is HCI / IS?  HCI research that is published in IS outlets (socially defined by the IS editors and reviewers)  HCI research done by “IS” researchers  HCI with more business / management settings / implications. e-commerce, executive scanning, organizational information access, decision support, team collaboration, business games … (Non-HCI topics: user satisfaction, technology acceptance, theory of reasoned action ?)

5 Key HCI/IS Publication Outlets  INFORMATION SYSTEMS JOURNALS  Rank 1: Premium Journals ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction ACM Transactions on Information Systems Information Systems Research Management Information Systems Quarterly IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics International Journal of Human-Computer Studies Journal of Management Information Systems Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology Small Group Research
