Geographic Data for Sustainable Development (GISD) Initial Capabilities Pilot Douglas Nebert U.S. Federal Geographic Data Committee

World Summit The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) will be the 10-year follow-on summit after Rio/Agenda21 Johannesburg, South Africa, August 20- September 3 will the venue for the event Ministerial delegations and interested parties expected to number over 30,000 individuals

Geographic Information for Sustainable Development An agenda item promoted by the UN Environment Programme, U.S. Government, Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI), OGC and others to demonstrate use of geographic data and services in sustainability matters An exhibition area is being established to host presentations for GISD

OpenGIS Pilot Request for Proposals was issued by OGC in April for participants to develop an initial capability for GISD Intention is to set up baseline services, data, servers, and client software for used in both demonstration and continued activities

Portal Construction Build and expose on the WWW a ‘portal’ that makes location of these existing data and OGC-accessed services a one-stop access. Operate during the demo preparation period and the demo period during the last 10 days of August with 100% availability Continue operation with limited down time for maintenance

Data Catalogs Build and maintain on the WWW a Catalog/Registry system that is used to locate these data. Build and provide on the web a catalog / service registry, to include registration of data and service providers to be used during the demonstration Continue operation with limited down time for maintenance, to include registration of additional data and service

Services Extend designated existing Web Servers with WMS and/or WFS interfaces to enable interaction with SCOTS clients Provide Africa data on existing OGC- enabled WWW servers. Add OGC-enabled server to existing WWW data server.

Clients Create and demonstrate several different kinds of client applications that are able to use the facilities above. –Commercial browser –Commercial desktop –NGO browser –Non-commercial browser or desktop

Operational Partners Central Regional Program for the Environment (CARPE) UMd MIOMBO Network URI Tanzania-Kenya Coastline Management UN FAO NOAA EIS-Africa USGS USAID US Dept of State CIESIN UNEP

Opportunities GISD is looking for hosted environmental, social, and imagery data that are/can be supported by OpenGIS services with FGDC/ISO metadata in OGC Data Catalog Viewer/analytical software can be shown that expoits data content GISD exhibit with staff can show your scenario for addressing sustainable development, provide by July 1, 2002
