doc.: IEEE /0607r0 SubmissionRye Cheol, ETRISlide 2 Abstract Local information services for Augmented Reality Some use case suggestions and requirements for the Infrastructure Service Discovery Study Group meeting, May 2012, Atlanta, GA, USA May 2012

doc.: IEEE /0607r0 Submission Use Case 1: Local information service for Augmented Reality in Arboretum Description: John is walking through a path in a arboretum and becomes curious about a tree in his sight. He opens an AR browser on a smartphone for local information service and focuses on the tree. On the screen of smart phone, he can read the name of the tree and where the tree originated from without getting close to the tree to see a sign or QR code tagged on the trunk. He starts to surf internet from an URL given. Rye Cheol, ETRISlide 3 May 2012

doc.: IEEE /0607r0 Submission Use Case 1: Sequence of Events (User) Step 1. AP broadcasts local information consists of an image feature (ex, Eigen-image) of a tree with a tag for it in a beacon frame. AP schedule local information for each beacon frame. Step 2. John’s smartphone receives the beacon frames and parses a beacon frame into an image feature and a tag if it has local information. It saves recent pairs of an image feature and a tag in memory. Step 3. While walking along a path, John finds a tree and opens augmented reality application and focuses on the tree. It matches current image focused or captured with saved image features to find out most similar picture. When it is matched to one, it displays the tag on the screen in pair. May 2012 Rye Cheol, ETRISlide 4

doc.: IEEE /0607r0 Submission Use Case 1: Sequence of Events (Provider) Step 1. Information provider such as arboretum authority or hobbyists of the garden takes pictures with a smartphone for a tree at the typical places he expected a visitor could take pictures. Step 2. He tags some information for each pictures as the same way of twitting with a picture. Step 3. Tagging application submits the pairs of an image feature and a tag of a tree to AP. Rye Cheol, ETRISlide 5 May 2012

doc.: IEEE /0607r0 Submission Use Case 1: Summary of Requirements STA providing information prepares image feature fits in a beacon frame with a tag of an object. STA submits information to AP in a probe request or by post-association method. AP accepts local information from information provider. AP broadcasts local information with images in beacon fames in schedule. STA recognizes local information in beacon frames and keep them in memory. Rye Cheol, ETRISlide 6 May 2012

doc.: IEEE /0607r0 Submission Use Case 2: Local information service in a office for Augmented Reality Description: John tags on the fridge in the office for his milk, but with a expiry date for cleaner by taking a picture in front of fridge. Ann setups printer for his smartphone by AR browsing without pressing buttons on the printer or reading office manual and chooses it on AR to print. Bob focuses his smartphone on TV to look a channel guide without turning on. When Jane enters the office, she gets ideas what’s happening by receiving three local information tags, one for fridge, another for printer and the other for TV. Rye Cheol, ETRISlide 7 May 2012

doc.: IEEE /0607r0 Submission Use Case 2: Sequence of Events (John skipped, refer Use Case 1) Ann –Step 1. Printer maintainer provides local information for setting up such as IP address, hardware capabilities and protocol with a few pictures of printer taken at typical position. –Step 2. Ann setups a printer by looking through AR browser. –Step 3. Ann chooses a printer to send a job among printers at the office in AR browser or printer list. Bob –Step 1. TV maintainer provides local information for TV with an URL for subscribed channel guide –Step 2. Bob focuses on TV and read current program information on the guide Jane –Step 1. When Jane enters into the office, her smartphone receives beacon frames with local information. –Step 2. Jane realizes what’s happening in the office without opening AR browser but receiving beacon frames Rye Cheol, ETRISlide 8 May 2012

doc.: IEEE /0607r0 Submission Use Case 2: Summary of Requirements Beacon frames or pre-association frames need to be specified to contain local information Local information includes object/service types and related attributes –memo just for general object –printer setup attributes for printer. Locality lessens security concerns but simple security model for protecting AP from digital graffiti is required. AP need to be extended to use a dedicated message server. In a busy area, stopping of local information service and broadcasting bare beacon frames is required for traffic control Rye Cheol, ETRISlide 9 May 2012
