Definition Allotropes- Variant of a substance consisting of only one type of atom. Examples Diamonds Graphite Fullerene

Diamonds Composed of carbon Used in most jewelry Contains fullerenes, which are allotropes found in carbon and carbon based substances. Covalent carbon bonds make up diamonds Very rare and expensive

Graphite Good conductor of electricity Most stable form of carbon Can most likely be described as a black and soft. Atoms within graphite are arranged in “sheets” The picture to the below is showing graphite. It has a black color and smooth texture. To the right of that is the graphite atoms in “sheets”

Fullerenes Not graphite or diamond Fullerene’s density is half that of aluminum’s Contain dozens of spherical arrangement of carbon atoms. Below is a picture of a fullerene. It shows the dozens of carbon atoms in a spherical pattern.

How it relates to what we’ve studied. Shows the arrangement of atoms and density of materials as we have done in previous labs. Related to carbon, which is an element within the periodic table that we studied thoroughly. I.E. Our percentage problems. We’ve learned about the atom and all its components, which relates because all allotropes have different arrangements of them.

Uses Diamonds- Mainly used in jewelry Graphite- Used in pencils Fullerenes- Used/found in all carbon based substances

Questions What’s stronger: a diamond or graphite? What is one use of graphite? True or false: Diamonds are used in most drills, when mining in the ground, due to their near indestructibility?
