Rinkeby  Rinkeby a municipal district, 20 minutes with subway north of Stockholm  Rinkeby has an area of one square kilometre  At present, about 50 different languages are represented Rinkeby. 99% of the children speaks another language than Swedish at home.

 Since June 2007 Rinkeby and Kista is one municipal district.  people with different cultures and religions live in the distict of Rinkeby – Kista

 The municipal questions concerning Rinkeby-Kista is decided by the Borough Committee as in other residential areas of Stockholm there are many pre-schools and schools in Rinkeby.

 Most families send their children to a pre- school from 1-6 years.

 The most widely spoken languages are Somalian, Turkish, Arabic, Kurdish and Farsi, Tigrinia and Serbo-Croat..

 Akalla Hill

 This cultural and linguistic diversity is a challenge for the local community authorities, both from an organizational and from an educational perspective, and calls for developing a language policy for the community. Special language programs has been developed, practised and evaluated during the years. The program is based on the curriculum for ordinary pre-schools and schools but certain questions concerning second language acquisition are focused

 The primary goal of the multicultural program is for children and youth in Rinkeby-Kista is to be able to thrive in Swedish society as other children in other parts of the city. This goal is achieved through the development of academic knowledge, language development, social competence and personal maturity of the children. The same approach is used in pre- schools and schools, such that children´s development and learning is recognized and followed along a continuum from 1-16 years.

Focus on language.  The work in the preschools encourages the preservation of children’s first language.  Teachers inform parents of the importance of speaking their mother tounge with children at home and encourage oral and written language to be part of daily life.  Since children who enter school are expected to speak Swedish, pre-school is viewed as an important setting for children to develop their competence in their new language.  Partnership with parents is an important field to develop. Staffs aim to help parents feel comfortable and safe.  Other important areas for the pre-schools are; physical and cultural activities and, maybe most important; education in social competence and democracy.
