Japan Once Japan opened up to the west in the 1800’s it welcomed new technology and idea’s – This led to Japan becoming a major manufacturing country. From 1890’s to about 1940’s Japan became a world power and started conquering smaller Asian countries for their natural resources. – Japan enters into World War II on the side of the Axis. (Germany, Italy, and now Japan).

Japan After Japan was defeated in World War II their country was in ruins. – America helped rebuild Japan and its industries – The Japanese government helped industries by giving them subsidies. This allows the companies to build large factories and sell more goods.

Japan Japan’s industries focuses on technology and advancement on current inventions. – In Japan they have modern robots, bi-pedal walkers. – Japan is known for video games (Nintendo & Sony), DVD’s and Blu-ray, the Bullet train, and many more…

Japan Japan has a very strong economy because they trade goods like these and others with the rest of the world. – However most Japanese citizens do not buy foreign products. Japanese manufacturing companies form keiretsu. – This is when a group of companies join together to work towards one another success.

Japan Japan is facing a major problem. – Japan does not have a growing labor force of young workers. – This is because of the low birth rate in Japan and the high restrictions on immigration. – This is posing a challenge for Japan.

Korea North Korea and South Korea are divided by the DMZ (demilitarized zone) – It is 2.5 miles wide and 151 miles long. – The DMZ was established in 1953 after a truce/ cease fire-agreement was signed.

North Korea It is a communist nation. – The country has isolated itself from the rest of the world. North Korea is rich in minerals – After World War II North Korea was consider the industrial center of the Korean Peninsula. – However today North Korea can not compete with South Korea economically. This is because North Korea does not have the technology or man power to manufacture high quality goods

North Korea North Korea faced a famine in – Due to poor farming methods and bad weather 220,000 people died between – It was the first time that North Korea ever asked aid from a non-communist country.

South Korea South Korea is a democratic country with a free enterprise economy. – South Korea focuses on heavy industry. They are the world leading shipbuilders. – South Korea has a growing electronics industry. They are the leading producer of silicon chips. – The government of South Korea also passed programs that has helped farmers as well. Some programs include increase in crop production, improved housing, roads, water supplies and electricity in rural areas.

South Korea South Korea however faces many challenges. – They lack natural resources so they must import raw materials. Materials like Oil, Iron, Steel, and Chemicals.

Years of Tension in the Korean Peninsula Many people in both North and South Korea hope that one day both nations can be unified once again. – In June of 200 both leaders from North Korea and South Korea met in Pyongyang. Both nations agreed to work toward peace and cooperation. – However North Korea has been working towards developing nuclear weapons. On April 13 th 2012 North Korea attempted launched a satellite into space. However it blew up 90 seconds after launch. On December 12 th 2012 North Korea launched a second satellite into space. This one was successful.
