Subatomic particles in an atom Read the first two paragraphs on p.72. Define proton, neutron, and electron Define nucleus, electron cloud, and subatomic particle Are subatomic particles the smallest particles known?

The atomic nucleus Turn to page 75 and read about the “Composition of the Atomic Nucleus” What is the charge of a proton? What is the charge of a neutron? Summarize the 2nd paragraph, focusing on key information. What determines an atom’s identity? Why are you not learning about other subatomic particles?

Forces in the nucleus Read the next section titled “Forces in the Nucleus”. Why would we expect a nucleus with more than one proton to be unstable? Why is the nucleus of an atom stable? How many protons can fit within a stable nucleus? What about neutrons? What are these forces called?

Practice problems Complete the practice problems on p.80, numbers 1, 2, and 3. After I’ve checked your answers, turn to p.87 and complete numbers 2, 3, and 4 on the section review.
