Prepositions and Prepositional Phrases

What is a preposition?  A word that shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word.

Examples My brother ran into the tree. My brother ran around the tree. My brother ran behind the tree. I talked during the class. I talked after the class. I talked before the class.

Knock Once Describe the room using prepositions. Write to someone that is blind and explain where things in the classroom are located.

Prepositional Phrases  Preposition + noun/pronoun = prepositional phrase.  The noun or pronoun are also called the object of the preposition.

Examples Carter got picked up down the street. -- the noun STREET is the object of the preposition DOWN. Suzy hopped in front of us. -- the pronoun US is the object of the preposition IN FRONT.

 You can find the cafeteria right by the school library.  The baseball sailed right over the tall fence.  Crazy Evan took his math test with a bright green crayon. crayon.  Use the ladder that is leaning against the wall.  There was a big battle at this location centuries ago.  The papers fell to the floor.  The mouse ran quickly but quietly along the hallway’s edge.   The balloon floated gently over the valley.  The bullet went right through the thick wooden door.
