Environmental Management System  The College operates an Environmental Management System (EMS) certified to the Green Dragon Environmental Standards.  The Green Dragon Standard is split into 5 levels that assist organisations to develop and implement an EMS in a structured approach.  Initially achieved level 2 at the Hill in 2005  2007 achieved level 2 across all 6 campuses  2008 achieved level 3 across all 6 campuses  In July 2009, Groundwork (Wales) conducted an environmental audit against the requirements of level 4 of the Green Dragon Environmental Standard. As a result of the audit the college was successfully awarded level 4 of the standard with no issues or non-conformities being identified.  Level 4 is equivalent to ISO  Work has now commenced on level 5 – a proposed date for achieving this standard is December 2010

Achievements Environmental Achievements 08/09  Achieved Green Dragon Environmental Standard level 4 at all 5 campuses  72.87% of all waste produced was recycled and prevented from being sent to land fill sites  100% of all paper and cardboard disposed of via the blue bin scheme was recycled  A 6.47% reduction in the total energy used throughout the college  A 11% reduction in direct CO2 emissions  A 5.35% reduction in water usage across the college  Achieved level 3 of the Welsh Assembly Governments ‘Sustainable Procurement Assessment Framework’.  Environmental training provided to over 300 staff  There were no pollution or environmental reports received from any environmental enforcing agency.  Shortlisted for the 2010 Envirowise Public Sector Sustainability Award

Waste Management During the college reduced the overall tonnage of waste by 243 Tones when compared to The actual waste produced was 565 Tones of waste with 416 Tones of the total waste being recycled % of all waste produced by the college being recycled. During the college continued to improve on the recycling of paper and included the recycling of cardboard through the blue bin scheme as a result a 100% of all paper and cardboard disposed via the blue bins was recycled

Energy Management Energy  For the third consecutive year the college achieved a substantial reduction in its total energy consumption. One of the environmental aims and objectives set by the college for was to achieve a reduction of 2.5% across the college based on consumption. The total combined energy consumption for equated to kWh a reduction of some kWh when compared to 2007 – This equated to a substantial 6.47% reduction on the previous year Electricity (kWh) Gas (kWh)13172, Heating Oil (kWh) Total (kWh)

 Carbon Emissions  For the third consecutive year the college achieved a substantial reduction in its total CO2 emitted. One of the environmental aims and objectives set by the college for was to achieve a reduction of 2.5% across the college based on its emissions.  The total carbon emissions for the college during was Tonnes CO 2e, a reduction of some Tonnes CO 2e, when compared to , this equates to a comprehensive 11% reduction in CO 2e emissions from energy and transport use. This value was calculated using correction factors provided by the carbon trust and based on the energy consumed and mileage covered by the college minibuses and staff business mileage Total (Kg CO2)

How were the achievements made  Implementation of the EMS system  Comprehensive waste management contract  Quarterly environmental / waste audits  Monthly energy monitoring of all campuses  K2N tracking and monitoring system for energy  Reducing heating and process loads in buildings by upgrading the insulation and control systems.  Improving lighting efficiency by upgrading old fluorescent tubes to more efficient high frequency types and installing improved controls.  Enhancing utility monitoring arrangements through the implementation of monitoring & targeting and investigating the improvement of sub- metering arrangements of buildings.  Implemented Power-Save software for all PC’s and Mac’s  Implemented environmental awareness training programme for staff

The next step  Achieve level 5 of the Green Dragon Environmental Standards  Further development of environmental training  Documents within the EMS will be controlled to prevent mistakes.  Further develop the data collection process on transport, both direct and indirect, to ensure accurate carbon emissions can be calculated.  Development of travel plans for staff  Reduce energy and water use by 2.5% across all campuses  Continue to take into account energy efficiency at the design stage for all new building projects and refurbishment work.  Achieve level 4 of the Sustainable Procurement Assessment Framework (SPAF),  Further reduce the waste sent to landfill and increase recycling where practicable
