Genre Study: Poetry Michele Edgley INST 6000 October 31, 2011

Poetry Teaching poetry in the library is a doable lesson plan. You can choose reading, writing or a combination of both. I love to add in a study of the poets. Their stories are unique and many like Bill Martin Jr. didn’t learn to read until high school. They can be very motivational to reluctant readers and poems can be short, interesting reads!

High School Choice Poetry Speaks is a great book. It has a variety of authors and a CD. Many of the authors read their work. The other cool feature is space for students to add their own poems to the book!

Junior High Choice A Kick in the Head shows step-by-step how to create over a dozen kinds of poems. It has original torn- paper art. It shows how to write all the types of poems and shows the qualities that make the rhyme, meter or lines that create the poem.

Upper Elementary Choice Jack Prelutsky started with a website to motivate young poets and used poemstarts. The poems were so funny they eventually became a book and the poems are easily accessible for young students.

Early Elementary Choice Lots of early elementary books have rhythm, rhyme and repetition as a way of teaching young readers to love and embrace language. Who could choose just one???

Let’s Talk about poetry vocabulary Couplet TercetQuatrain Acrostic Poem List PoemPoemstart

Today we are WRITERS! We are going to join Jack Prelutsky writing poems of our own on Scholastic.com. You can even publish your poems later online. Please take out a piece of paper. There are two writing prompts and you can choose either one. We can share our poems if there is time tonight.

Other Sites I love for Poems If you haven’t seen it is well worth exploring. The site has tons of lesson plans and even an interactive Diamonte poem interactive program. Here is the shape poem link resources/student-interactives/shape-poems html resources/student-interactives/shape-poems html Another program that works great and teaches Haiku if your school has it is Inspiration. It is a bit costly but some schools have it.

More and More and More Books Dark Emperor by Joyce Sidman Mirror, Mirror: A Book of Reversible Verse by Marilyn Singer The Bill Martin Jr Big Book of Poetry by Bill Martin Dave the Potter: Artist Poet, Slave by Laban Carrick Hill Anything by Shel Silverstein (poemwise), Jack Prelutsky, Bruce Lansky, Dr. Seuss or great classics!
