The Process Evolves With Experience An educational platform was developed by the team using documents and information Topics on the platform are diverse with the goal of meeting attendees and members educational needs

ONS Information Educational needs assessments Evaluations from prior congress attendees Hot issues and coming trends Concerns and ideas of members, SIGs Councils and committees

The 09 Congress Team Team leader Team leader elect Local liaisons for 09 and for 10 Members just like you – staff, APNs, managers, inpatient, outpatient Abstract leader (researcher) from ANR SIG Different regions of the country

Call for topics Done electronically Due after congress and prior to the team planning meeting Topics from the educational platform and other topics submitted by members, confirmed speakers, committees, councils, SIGs and focus groups

Speakers Try to avoid any conflicts of interest with speakers Geographic and cultural diversity Experts Presentation skills Meet deadlines

Level of content Introductory – no prior knowledge needed Intermediate – provide in-depth content to experienced participants who have some working knowledge related to the topic Advanced – prepared for nurses with 3+ years of experience in the topic

Types of sessions Pre-congress sessions – full day (7 hrs) and half day (3.5 hrs) Instructional sessions – 90 minutes of didactic presentation, provide “how to” information Discussion sessions - 90 minutes in length with built in time for discussion and participation by the audience

Types of sessions Special sessions and topics vary by year, usually 90 minutes Joint sessions with other organizations International sessions

Special sessions Nominated lectureships Bench to bedside Distinguished Researcher Clinical Lecture Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial Lecture

Podium and poster sessions Call for abstracts is near the end of the year Research, clinical practice, education and leadership abstracts are selected Podium sessions – usually 3-4 abstracts per session Poster sessions – two during meeting

Topic selection Reviewed by team Topics that are well developed and best fit the platform and educational needs of the members and attendees Using the education agenda and ONS strategic plan Those that best fit are selected for presentation Variety of topics including clinical, leadership, research and administration

Team responsibilities Review all ONS documents and evaluations in order to discuss topic ideas for education platform Develop conference goals and objectives Topic selection and coordinator notification Liaison with coordinator Discuss coordinator responsibilities Updating coordinators with reminders

Team responsibilities Assist and mentor coordinators with speaker selection, slide preparation, content and speaker development Attend meetings and participate in conference calls Review of syllabus slides Attend and audit congress sessions, provide support and assistance to coordinators and others when needed during sessions

Team responsibilities Collaborate with ONS education team and other ONS teams Local liaison helps to coordinate local arrangements to support conference Abstract team receives scored abstracts and selects abstracts for podium and poster presentation

Deadlines July – topic confirmation August – letters to coordinators, speaker upload system ready September (early) – program information and forms uploaded October/November – call for abstracts January – abstracts due February – syllabus slide set due April – final slides due
